Hi Heidi,
Great buy in-when they understand how the course is going to help them in their chosen field of study.

Hi Monique,
How do you get students to see the benefit of the course so that they buy in. They need to understand what the course will do for them--buy in.
Patricia Scales
I make them laugh. I also make it very age appropriate in the discussion so that they can feel as though they relate to the discussion.
Not sure what you mean buy course buy in?
I try to use a lot of real world examples from recent media reports that highlight the relevancy of the course material to their future profession. This is especially effective when we discuss the costs of healthcare, ethical dilemmas and legal issues in healthcare. There is an endless supply of news articles that highlight the directly tie the course material to the real world.

Make the course as appealing and fun for all students I can through well-prepared, and professional instruction and a sense of humour. If I can make it relevant and fun I'll typically see return customers.
Hi Andrea,
Students want to know how the information is going to benefit them. Students will buy into the course once they understand the relevance of the course either/both personally/professionally.

Hi Brian,
I concur! Excitement definitely starts with the instructor. The instructor should let their enthusiasm be contagious to all students.

I mainly teach APA format to students ... it's challenging to make that fun (which I admit to them up front, as an icebreaker). To get buy-in, I introduce what we're going to cover and why, and then I tell them we're going to create a couple of templates together that will be useful to them for many classes to come. I feel they are more excited knowing they are going to walk away from the instruction with a tangible, useful thing.
I really think one of the best ways to get the buy in from the students is to show your passion for the class. When you are passionate about the course, then the fun happens, the enthusiasm happens, and then they feel they will get the most out of their instructor.
Hi Donna,
This serves as a great bonding experience as well. inevitably someone has shared the same/similar experience.
Patricia Scales
Hi David,
Awesome way to get students to connect. It is important for students to understand the relevance of the course to promote buy in.

Usually on the first meeting with students, I use an ice breaker situation. For example, I may tell them about one of my best and worse days as a nurse in the OR or whatever setting is appropriate. Then I ask them to share a brief story too. Most of the time, these brief introductions into a great or not so great experience provides an opening to get all of us on the same side of the educational opportunity. Some students will share, some won't but it works to get us all thinking about how many similar challenges we have had. Then we can together go forward and achieve a successful learning!
I use real world examples to help create interest and get that buy-in. Our courses are 3 weeks in length so I have to start early. One of the methods I use is to ask a series of questions waiting for certain answers from the majority of the class. As these answers come out I can use them to direct the class to correct or better answers. A majority of the students tend to participate and it gives us a reference point for later discussion.
Hi Ashley,
You have it! Understanding course relevancy to a student is a must. Students need to know how they are going to benefit from the course.
Patricia Scales
Hi Jamie,
You are on point! Students need to understand how they are going to benefit from the course either personally or professionally.
Patricia Scales
Hi Keith,
Consistency is key! Students will know that you are fair simply because you are consistent.
Patricia Scales
use of real world examples, fun group activities, expressing what they will get out of the class material and how they can use it to be successful in their career.
Have consistant expectations.
Keep things interesting.
Be clear about what the student will get out of the course.
I believe the best way to get buy in from students is find a way to get them to relate to the subject. It will be interesting to them if they can find a way to apply it in their lives. I am a dental assistant instructor and relating to dental is easy. Everyone has teeth and needs to care for them.
