I try and let them know they will need these skills in the field they are going into.

Hi Joel,
Keeping the chat is encouraged, just make sure things are managed.
Patricia

Hi Kacey,
You have a natural knack for teaching. You do not have to fake anything, and it is evident that you love what you do. I am sure your students enjoy your classes.
Patricia

Hi Randy,
I like the idea of the side fun project. I can see how this generates excitement. I got excited just from reading your response.
Patricia

Hi David,
You are so right! Students can really tell when you are being fake about your enthusiasm as well as caring ways. Our student should mean more to us, and we should sincerely give them all we have each day!
Patricia

Hi Anece,
If you don't stand firm, students will begin to take you for a complete joke...
Patricia

Beingt excited about the subject matter is very important. If you are not motivated then the student will not be motivated

I incorporate interactive activities which allow them to apply their skills and evaluate each other. This helps them feel empowered and like they are part of a decision making body.

One way I use to get my students exicited is to show and explain, the use of tools, equiptment and course content they will learn. That always gets them exicited

You know, I don't really think about making the students excited about the course, it just happens. I am thoroughly passionate about my profession and I think it comes through with the delivery of the course content. I LOVE to tell the students stories about real-life events/traumas; the students listen and participate with such gusto! I also like to see what their experiences are with the profession; this gets them involved from the get-go.

Hi Donna,
What do you do to get your students excited about the course?
Patricia

First, I make sure that I am excited about the course. This is not a false excitement as students will pick up on that easily. This is a genuine excitement I have for teaching a course.

I transfer this excitement into motivation in the classroom. This motivating factor encourages the student to learn more about the subject and challenge themselves in the process.

Depending on the course, I may give examples of other's success in learning the subject matter. I may give them a progressive project to work on and with each step praising them for good work. Then challenge them to take it to the next level. Students often surprise themselves at what they can accomplish and excites them to accomplish even more.

Stand firm on completion of assignments and listen to the heart of my students.

I have the students share their personal success stories in regard to the content learned. This motivates them and gives them peer reinforcement as well

Hi Sandy,
A variety is always good for students. Boredom is never a good thing.
Patricia

I agree abount what you were saying. I also found by using a variety of approaches to learning (ie powerpoint, student presentations videos, games etc)all help keep the students on their toes and helps to stumulate the students in different ways.

Hello,
I like using a variety of items to help teach. I use ppt and during lecture I stop and write on the board major araes to recap. I use hyperlink in the ppt because it helps me remember what are some great sites.

As a culinary instructor, it can be pretty easy at times to get new students excited. Often times on the first day of a new class I will have some sort of side "fun project" I'll be working on. Not anything needed for the class necessarily, but if there is anything I want to practice I will often leave it for the first day. When the students are walking in I might have a bread dough working, some sort of animal getting butchered, or a new recipe I'm developing. It gets their curiosity and interest peaked right off the bat.

Larry...as long as the instructor monitors and interacts with the class, I see not reason not to keep the chat on focus with posts that are based on facts and analysis.

Joel
