I explain to the students my personal experiences that are related to what the course covers. Nobody wants to learn useless facts and figures because they are perceived as "useless." However, when I am able to show them how such knowledge has helped me in the past they may be able to assign more value to the course content.

Hi Allison,
It is a great idea to put the students in the patients' shoes so that they fully understand the feelings and thoughts of the patients.

Hi Kelvin,
Great analogy to produce a sense of understanding. When students understand the see the relevance.

In my class I instruct on the propper way of maintaining the vehicle. I'm able to express the importance of maintainance and relate it to other things in their live that they need to maintain, like their homes and family. Thou different, the balance of a well maintained family is the same as a well maintained motorcycle. They laugh, but they seem to understand.

I am a clinical instructor, I try to put the student in the place of the patient, this helps them understand the emotions of the patient. By doing this activity it stresses the importance of learning and applying the skills correctly to be successful.

I teach IT courses and for the most part the atudent can readily see the relevancy as they are always interacting with with some form of a computer so the relevancy of a computer courses can be experienced on a daily basis.

With the beginning of every major topic covered throughout the course, I like to share a personal experience of how it was relevant to me as a professional in the field. I've found that students love to hear about real world experiences and personal experiences. It makes it more real for them. They become especially intruiged when the story is humorous or dramatic.

Hi James,
Students become really interested and motivated once they learn how the subject matter will apply to their career.

I feel the most important way of showing students the relevancy of a specific course is to give them illustrations of how the subject material relates to on the job experience.

Hi Charles,
I concur! Students need to and want to know how they are going to benefit from a course.

I have taught workshops dealing with "HOW THE BRAIN REMEMBERS" and, although oversimplified, one important fact is that "the more one knows, the easier it is for one to learn something new." This is true regardless of topic or discipline.

One can give examples of situations that may occur or personal experience of real life situations that the instructor has been involved in. These situations and experiences should be relevant to the course at hand.

I can use real-life scenarios to show relevancy.

In teaching an accelerated introductory law class to incoming students,I have to present a great deal of difficult material in a short amount of time. Emphasizing the relevance of the class material is a vital part of my ongoing effort not only to make sure the students are keeping up, but to keep them genuinely interested and motivated.

The best way for showing relevancy in the field my students are going to enter, is to show the lifetime earning capability they will have by earning the federal license in H.V.A.C.

I tend to show students real life examples of the course objectives and outcomes. I find that by doing this the students see the relevancy of the course. I will show the students how the work will be useful in their future careers and lives, even if they do not feel it is relevant now. The more real-life examples I can use and have students use in their work, and the more real-life experts I can bring in, the better this will be.

I show the relevancy of the course I teach by giving real life examples of how I used the topic in the workplace and I open discussion for students to give examples of how they used the course content knowledge in the workplace.

I show the relevancy of the course I teach by giving real life examples of how I used the topic in the workplace and i open discussion for studetns to give exapmles of how the used the knowledge in the workplace.

One of the ways I show relevancy is by using examples from my actual clients and my business and how what they are learning will be used in the real world.

Patrica I think I have done this one.

Respectfully,

Larry Bignall
