My overall strategy in getting course buy in from my students is humor, tied to real life scenarios that relate to the course materials.
The first day of class is critical, however, to get the students to "buy in" to what I hope to accomplish for and with them. I clearly state what the class expectations are and I make it clear that I will be relating real life scenarios to the theory in the textbook. At the very beginning of the class, I have each student tell a little about them self and inform them that I orient the class direction based on their backgrounds the future aspirations.

My major strategy in getting course buy in from my students is humor, tied to real life scenarios that relate to the course materials.

Hi Heidi,
You tend to get better focus and results from students when they fully understand how the course can help them professionally/personally.

Quite frankly, I was not even aware of the fact that "buy in" was a specific goal to strive for in a class, and therefore, did not have any objectives or strategies to reach those objectives of "buy in" to do this. So taking this courses is an eye opener on this one for me. Now I have done this unofficially, but it is usually just telling people why this class and information is important to the student's career.

Hi Lawrence,
You are so right! RELEVANCE!!!

Hi Calvin,
Awesome activity to help students see the relevance of computers in their chosen field of study.

Hi Tangee,
I agree! Students are motivated when students understand the full importance of a course.

Hi Melissa,
I really like how you make things very real for your students. Students love and need to hear success stories.

One Word - Relevance. Once the students understand exactly how the course is going to help them in their future career, it is easy to get "buy in".

I teach computer courses to students from other disciplines. I try to relate this topic to their disciplines and explain how to use programs for many other purposes. I also explain that the use of computers is taking over in most fields and without the proficiency getting hired might be more difficult.

I have the students research the use of technology in their field, how it is being used and how the new technology is changing the field.

Many seem to be posting that using "real world" examples and experience is a great way to get students to buy into the course. I agree. I think one of the most important parts of any class, is open discussion and using students' and instructors' experiences to "teach" the topic.

The more often students feel that the topic is "actually" important, they will better understand their role once in the field.

Present the students with real life scenario that will stimulate their thought, passion and interesting.

I rely on real world experiences and humor with to get my students to buy in. From the very first day I give the examples of what they will be seeing once the are in the field. I also tell my students of sucessful people that I know personally who have graduated from the program to show the students that all for the hard work will pay off.

Hi Shannon,
I like your entire outlook about gaining buy in from students. You have the complete package. Students like knowing that they can approach their instructor without being fearful.

Patricia Scales

Knowing that I am approachable, that no matter what question they have they are not nervous to ask.

Giving my background in the field and telling them how much I enjoy it and all the opportunities they have once they graduate.

Having fun in class, being relaxed but also knowing when to be serious.

Hi Erik,
I like to tell students how they are going to benefit from the course professionally to help them in their career to get buy in from them.

Patricia Scales

Real world application to the material is a must. I believe that anytime you can associate the material being taught with it's true application in the work force, it makes an impact.

Yes I agree because the student get a chance to see what possible outcome they have in the future.

Hi Aaron,
I concur! When students see and understand value, they automatically buy into the course.

Hi Erik,
Guest speakers are priceless, and students enjoy having them. Students are inspired by guest speakers.
