Hi Susan,
I agree! Students are very interested in hearing applicable stories as they apply to the real world.

Hi Alejandro,
When we make learning apply to the real world students have a keen interest.

Hi Jennifer,
Students like knowing how the course will apply to their career.
Patricia Scales
I like to explain to my students why the course is important by give them a personal or real examples that are going to present and how they can solve in an efficient and simple way.
I find that using a little humor in my class is a sure-fire way to hook the interest of the students and make them 'buy-in' to the course. A good way to incorporate humor is tell a short anecdote about yourself or someone you know. Learnders love to hear stories about what people in real life. Telling a story reltedto the course has the added benefit of breaching the learning in the classroom to the 'real-wold' and students' careers post-graduation.
I explain the course to the students and give them a chance to read the syllabus and ask questions. I have used my experience "real-life" scearios to explain why the course will be beneficial for them. I also like to use some form of ice breaker, ex. brain teaser or activity we can discuss to get to get the students actively talking an engaged.
Hi Lisandra,
Surprises do not go over very well with adult students. They like knowing in advanced exactly what is required of them.
Patricia Scales
I usually start a new class/module by giving the students an idea of what to expect of the class and what is required from them; I strongly believe that if they have a clear idea of what is to come we will all get along better and there will be no surprises/casualties of war.
Hi Thomas,
Students get really excited when they can see visual that pertains to the subject matter. Visual adds great clarity.

I engage the students in debate by dividing the class in to groups with a leader for each group.
Sometimes I engage them in role play depeding on the suject for example ; Human relations.
I show them video presentations and movies relevent to the subject
Hi Craig,
We have to let our students know that we are there to help them succeed. If they need help all they have to do is ask for it.
Patricia Scales
Hi Kristina,
Yes, as instructors we are some of our students ONLY role model.
Patricia Scales
Engage the students in discussions. Make each of them choose a topic and the merits of their topic to the lesson. The students will then feel a part of the learning enviroment and therefore feel engaged and hopefully wanting to further enhance their studies.
The students are in my class because of their chosen career path. I simply try to decrease their initial anxiety by telling them I will try to make the class as interesting as possible and will be available to them, as needed, for any help and guidance they need.
I like to take the time to teach students about myself, not only my academic achievements, but my professional experience. When they hear about my past experience they are very interested in hearing about my personal failures and success. It puts the instructor in a "role model" position which can be very powerful.
Hi Ms. Patricia,
Communication is very important to achieve an open dialog to learn and to successfully completed a class.
I encourage sharing real life experiences and to encourage working together to learning new concepts in order to learn the course material.
Works great and this encourages more learning. Let's Roll!
Hi Christina,
Students really love it when the instructor tells applicable stories to the lesson/subject matter.

Hi Sandra,
When we making teaching apply to the real world students have a different level of excitement and appreciation for the course.
Patricia Scales
Relevency is critical! Students must believe the content is important in their lives. I also believe that students attend better when they think the instructor is an expert in the field. The best and most interesting way to demonstrate mastery is by telling stories, when relevant, about one's experiences in the field.
I try to personalize the issue we are discussing or demonstrating on the patient. Each patient can have different needs and it is important for them to understand that. The student can get frustrated because we may have a different approach compared to the last patient.
