Hi John,
Good job based ont the way you get buy in from students. I like to make the theory applicable to the workplace to gain buy in from students. Students need to know that what they are learning will be applied in the workforce.
Patricia
Hi Melinda,
I like to let students know how the course applies to their career to get by in into the course.
Patricia
Hi Randall,
I like to bring in classified ads that are applicable to the information that they learn in the class.

I like to engage students by asking them what expectations they have for the class and what expectations they have for me as an instructor. I can then understand what motivated them to come to school and my particular class.
Strategies to use to get buy in from students begins with a good course outline. Acknowledge that not everyone knows all the answers and students are expected to ask questions. Posting key points on the board aid in the visualization process for the student. Using Socratic questioning help student to buy into the course.
I am new to this and still just experimenting and learning what works. All of my students are young, 20 to 26. They have little or no work experience and are curious about how things actually work in the field, so I tell a lot of personal stories from my years in the field. I am in a manufacturer's specialist training program, so I also spend time building enthusiasm for the brand by relating company history and showing projects and performance applications. Demonstrating tips and techniques in the lab also seems to have great appeal and get them to invest in the course.

I introduce myself, give a brief personal history and my work history. This way I believe that they know that I know what I am teaching. I let them know that if they ask a question and I don't know the answer, that I will get back to them with the answer, and I do get back to them. If I make a mistake, I will admit to making it, and then fix it. I do what I say, and I mean what I say.
Thank you. I taught various classes for the military for a long time and like the career college I teach at now these adult learners wanted the bottom line. How will this be applicable to my career. If you can't make that connection the students are there in body only, filling a square.
Teaching is sometimes described as management but I was taught that we manage things and we lead people. Our job, as I see it, is to be a leader preparing them for their new career. We can manage test, discussions, demonstrations etc but we must be leaders to these students if we are going to do our jobs correctly.
I believe the best method of getting buy in from the students is to demonstrate how this course will factor into their life and into their careers.
Hi Alvin,
Students have to feel that they can benefit from the painted picture. Students typically want to know how the course is going to help them in their chosen career.
Patricia
Hi Odette,
Once students realize that you are qualified and you have practical experience in the area, they really do buy in to the course. I like to share current classified ads based on the skills they will learn in the course so that they can see how marketable they can become.
Patricia
Hi Patricia,
I have only been teaching for a month. As a new instructor, I think what helped in getting buy in from my students on the first day of lecture was to discuss my expertise. I discussed my experience, advanced nursing knowledge and education.
Some strategies to get buy in from your students are painting a picture of the course, showing that the course is worth their time, and what the outcome of the course will be.
Hi Timothy,
Students will buy in to a course once they understand the course will broaden their knowledge base so that they are more knowledgeable professionally/personally.
Patricia
Hi Juan,
Computers are an easy one to sell to students. They come in knowing the improtance of computers. I teach these classes as well, and I like to bring in classified ads looking for people with these skills.
Patricia
I teach computer courses. I tell the students that skills in using a computer to run different software such as Word, PowerPoinr, Excel, and Acess are very necessary. I give examples of how and where in the different field the software is used. I tell the student that I will teach them a good solid foundation of the skills so that they can use the software. Then I ask the student to tell me and the class to tell us when they think they can use the skill in their work and in class.
I teach several courses as part of an overall seminar. The seminar will have an overarching theme. One technique I use to motivate and get buy in from my students is to give examples of how my course fits into the overarching theme of the seminar and how it will enhance there understanding of the overall theme. I like to give them an example of where they are now in their understanding of the subject matter and how my course will bring them up to a higher level of understanding and give them one more frame of reference or "tool' in their "tool box" of knowledge when the subject may come up in their careers.
I like to break the students into groups and have them define the subject, then have a group spokesman discuss each groups definition. This get's them talking to each other and breaks the ice, as well as gives them buy in to the subject.
Hi William,
Very thorough! I like to mention to my students potential income in their chosen field of study to get course buy in. I also like to express how the course is extremely useful in the workplace.
Patricia
It is nearly impossible to create a quality learning environment without student buy-in. When students buy in, there is a commitment to excellence as well as a motivation to learn and grow on the part of both students and the instructor.
Conditions that Promote Student Buy-In:
1- Developing trust with students that allows risk-taking behavior
2- Accommodating different learning styles
3- Using material that is relevant to real life
4- Presenting and sharing clear objectives
5- Setting the appropriate level of challenge
6- Implementing an effective assessment process
7- Using a fair evaluation process
