Hi Sir_Steven,
I love an open dialog as long as the topics are applicable to the subject matter.

Patricia Scales

I keep an open dialog in my classes. This serves as a doorway for an exchange of ideas, concepts and life experiences.

All of this helps me with my teaching and for my student's to learn their material.

Hi Mitessa,
I can tell you are excited about teaching and teaching is your passion. Continue to inspire our students
Patricia Scales

After reviewing course requirements, I colorfully explain my passion for teaching them! I allow them to briefly journey with me through the path that lead my straight to thier classroom. Then I stress how excited I am for them to be challenged by me to be even more equipt to enter thier new carer than I was..! Throughout our course I make sure they excel by teaching facts along side the experiences to expect!

Hi Abigail,
At my institution as a part of academic freedom, the instructor can have a guest speaker at any time.
Patricia

Hi Diane,
Students really become motivated when they receive positive feedback from the instructor.

Yes - the connection between the academic and the practical is always important. i strugggle, however, to make that connection at times especially for the MBC students. I wish my campus would make it a priority to have guest speakers come in and share their experiences - let the light of the real world shine on my students.

I like positive feedback for students. Makes them feel important.

Hi Diane,
Great way to determine how involved your students are in the lecture. I like to let my students know how they will benefit from the course in their career.
Patrica

Hi Cindy,
Sudents need to and want to know how the course is going to help them in their career.
Patricia

Hi Abigail,
Students really become interested when they know how they can utilize class information professionally as well as personally.
Patricia

Make an odd coment to see if they are paying attention. Such as when doing powerpoint slide that shows the test for color blindness I say "if you cannot read such and such (there are two sets of two numbers on slide and I say something different)you are color blind> they all stary saying "But I see.......!!"

Relating the course specifically to their careers is always a plus. I give specific examples of course objectives and how they will be relevant to their future careers.

I remind them that the course is not only necessary to get their certificate but is basic knowledge they will need on the job AND that a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology will help them better manage their own and their families' health issues!

After I explain the course and go over my expectations for the students, I put them in groups and have them come up with expectations for me. Then we discuss them as a class and sometimes even barter for incentives, such as breakfast if they have perfect attendance for several consecutive weeks. We also discuss why writing (I teach composition) is important to their careers. They often come up with things I hadn't even thought of, and it keeps them motivated even when for most of them writing is not a strong suit or an area of confidence.

Hi Daniel,
I also like to mention the potential income in their future field every opportunity I get.
Patricia

I use a lot of visual aids from their future field.

Hi Shantel,
Great list! These are sure ways to generate buy in from students.
Patricia

1. Establish common goals: Let the students know that their success is my success. And we need to work together as an oneteam to reach our goals.

2. Focuse on thier goals: Remind the students in order to fulfill their dreams or work in their chosen profession the possession of a license is necessary. In order to get the license a student is require to pass the national board written and regional clinical board exam. Development of proficiency of the skills and knowledge is an absolute necessity.

3. Support/insturct how to reach the goal: Share my experiences at work and discuss what was successful as a clinician and what to avoid to prevent unfavorble outcome. Especially in the lab setting often students do not see the relevence. Bring the students attention to the final end produt. In order to become a cofident and skilled clinician a student needs to practice until the required skills are become second nature.

In the first class of English 101, I ask students why having effective writing skills is important. I ask them what makes good writing, versus what makes a bad writer. We go around the room and I ask each person what their major is and what kind of job they are seeking. After they tell me, I ask them, "how might being an effective writer" help you to be more successful in this job? In other words, I get them to "buy in" to the course by showing them how it's going to help them to achieve their goals in the long run. It really works!
