Hi Diane,
A great way to grab students attention in the medical world. Medical personnel have people's life at stake.

In nursing you can tie what people need to know to what the lack of the knowledge could mean for a patient. This usually gives some value toyour course.
Hi Jane,
I have found that when learning relates to personal and/or professional students automatically buy into the course.
Patricia Scales
I start each class by arriving early. Next, I observe and listen to what the students are saying to each other and what they are physically doing prior to the class starting. I take what I learn and incorporate it into the lessson. I have found that this thoroughly engages the students in each individual class.I believe that we must relate what is going on in the student's daily lives as well as how they will use the course information in their futures.
Hi Connie,
When adult students know the "why" they tend to hang on to the information.
Patricia Scales
Hi Michael,
You are in a great position for your students. You can really share your story to encourage students. Awesome to be a graduate of the institution where you are an instructor!

When introducing a new section of the body, I always introduce the bones and then the muscles that attach to them. When discussing each section, I discuss specific pathologies that students may come across and various ways they may be able to treat that specific area. We take time to dicuss injuries as well.
Doing this also gives students time to ask questions they may have about a specific illness and possibly share experience.
They seem to retain the sections of bone and muscle better when they truly understand why it is important for them to now in the future.
I use myself as an example, as I am alumni from the same school and graduated in 1988, the curriculum has changed, classes were split into more classes due to more information needing to be given to our students. I struggled in school due to personal challenges and still survived.
I provide them reflection into my career and the success and failures that i experienced in order to let them know that we are all human, and the bar is still set high for all of us. it is how we approach that bar and what we do once it is crossed either favorably or unfavorably.
They see my successes and willingness to try again and again if needed to achieve goals.
I advise them on how the course will effect their career and why they need to fully understand the material and perform the tasks.
I've also been a corporate trainer and from that background know that a WIIFM is very important. What's in it for me from the start lets the learner know how the content will benefit them.
I like to tell the students some on my learning experiences when dealing with a particular subject. Many times they have told me how helpful it is to remember things when they can associate it with one of my experiences.
Hi Dr. Linda,
Case studies make textbook learning real. Students get to imagine scenarios in a real work situation.

Many times I bring clinical experience into the classroom for the students. They appear to love the case studies and it certainly helps with their critical thinking as well as solidifying the text knowledge that we have discussed. I have had students refer back to specific cases later in the course work with great questions, which shows they are applying the new knowledge and critically thinking how to apply it to their chosen health career.

All our students are adults between the ages of 17 (rare) to 50s and above. With thes adult learners, if you cannot tie in what you are doing to what their goals are, you lose them before you start.
From the first day when we review the syllabus, I relate the material to their goals. One of the first assignments I have them do is to write a one-page introduction of who they are and what they want to get from our class and from their program in general. This assignment helps me to see what motivates them and what their expectations are.
For many of them, they want a better job and a better place in life. I then relate the assignments to helping them meet these goals.

Hi Gloria,
I like to always share with my students how the course will help them in their career to promote course relevancy.
Patricia Scales
Hi Timothy,
Absolutely! Students love it when we make learning apply to the real world.
Patricia Scales
Customize course content to each of them, making them see that part of their goals and that will finish and achieve career success.
Is relevant. Usually works better than trying to give each his students, however, it is interesting to recognize that planning a conference has not only the cognitive but also what impact does the delivery of it in the audience, due to the how we got to them.
Thank you.
Show how it applies to the real world and give examples and maybe your own experiences.
My students are seeking careers in law enforcement and security, I started the class off with video of one my responses to 911 call. I demonstrated using the video the importance of office safety and how to secured it.
