Make sure you explain the information so that the student understands the information and then "tie" that information back into the "big picture".

Hi DARRON,
As instructors, we have to get students to see that there is certainly a connection to the course to their career.

Hi Dan,
Students love it and are more excited when we making learning apply to the real world.

Hi Cynthia,
You have it! Adult learners need to and want to know how they are going to benefit from the course professionally.

The best way in my opinion is to give examples , scenarios of why the course material is so vital. If the student cant see relationship between course material and their career they quickly lose focus; then connecting with the students learning habits good or bad now become even more challenging because they will lack effort.

I think that relating things I have dealt within industry and my unique experiences can help them get a more real-world feel for the course content and its relevance.

Yes, I believe that showing we are human and fallible makes us more real to our students and that our message can come across better that way.

I try to bring my real world experience to the classroom as I have not spent my whole professional life in education. I think this enhances the learning value, give a real world feel to it and relates the sourse material to what they are liable to run into out in the real world.

One way to show students relevancy of the course is to describe how a student will be able to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the course in the real world. It is very important for adult learners to feel they are not wasting their time and that what they are learning is applicable to what they want to do once they are finished with the course. Describing how the information they are learning will benefit them in their current job, help them do a job better, or help them become eligible for a new line of work and teach a new skill are all extremely important when teaching adults.

Hi Rebecca,
When learning is made applicable to the real world, our students have more of an interest in learning.

By giving them real world comparisons of what they are learning as a point of reference. For example: understanding the purpose of Gram staining in microbiology to establish course of action in anttibiotic selection to treat a wound infection for a patient. Since antibiotics are specific to Gram negative or Gram positive microorganisms properly obtaining a specimen and performance of a Gram stain is necessary.

What I find works well at this school in the general education course I teach is to apply every assignment to the given career fields represented and point out how this skills would be of benefit to the student. When I do this, they see the relevancy of the task and don't seem to balk at having to do it.

Hi Charles,
It certainly is important for students to be able to retain the information so that they can apply what they have learned on the job. I like to make it plain to students how the information is going to help them in their career to show course relevancy.

Patricia Scales

Hi John,
I like to let the students know how the course is going to benefit them in their career, and then we begin the work.

Patricia Scales

i think you can guide the learning process so they can retain the vast amounts of info

i use hands on show and tell.

Being positive and encourage questions. I have the advantage of working in the field and am able to relate with ease the day to day issues with many of our discussions.

Hi Olaolu,
When students understand that what they are learning in the classroom will be applied on the job, they see the relevance.

Patricia Scales

Hi Amanda,
Using guest speakers is a good way to tie textbook theory with on-the-job application.
