To me, a lot of it has to do with appealing to their learning style. Although I have participated in many discussions about how effective learning styles may be, one indesputable fact is that many people prefer to learn a certain way (regardless of effectiveness). By providing examples, an instructor will be allowing students to see how the same task has been accomplished successfully in the past.
