Showing examples of student work
Why is it helpful to show your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course?
Hi Melissa,
I fully understand! Some students get a better understanding when they can actually see what is expected of them.

I think that students need to have an idea of what is expected of them. I think that an example is a great hands on visual for students to fully take in what you expect of them. Some students (such as myself when I was one) have a hard time reading instructions and then putting those instructions into an assignment. If a student can have an example to go off it will give them a starting point or jumping off point, and I think that sometimes you can get more work out of them, especially if they are "competing" so to speak to be on that wall of fame.

Hi Mabel,
When examples are shared students really are more at ease. We should do all we can to put our students at ease. College in itself is very stressful.

Hi Dawn,
We must provide our students with clear expectations and providing examples bring about great clarity.

Showing examples of what work will be expected helps to decrease the stress level of the class in general. However, your OCD students will still geet in a tizzy regarding papers and projects.
Knowing what to expect, a student can budget their time wisely, to include studying, projects and papers. Also, it helps them to know what standard of expertise you expect or do not expect from them.
they know what is expected and they will feel comfortible participating in the class and doing the assignments
Hi Sheri,
Having a guide for students to go by really simplifies things.

Hi Brandy,
Students feel a lot more at ease when they are not blindsided. We should provide as much clarity to our students as possible.

Hi Cynthia,
Super! Students love having papers to reference, especially when they are preparing for a national certification.

It is a good idea to show the students a sample of what is expected so that they have a guide to utilize.
When you show your students what your expectations are, you can help with performance anxiety, and you can also help lead them to the right answer. When students know what is expected of them, they're much more likely to produce an accurate and proper assignment.
I totally agree with you. I feel that showing the students the work they will be completing will help them to not be so stressed. It will also help them to prepare mentally for what's ahead instead of being blindsided on the first day of class when they receive the syllabus.
I give my students a packet of papers on the first day of class. In this packet, I discuss what is expected and when things are due. I give them examples of questions that may be on their national exam, in order for them to start preparing.
Hi James,
Students love seeing the final product; great clarity is added when students can see what the assignment is suppose to look like.

They will know whats expected of them. Also they will know what they will be learning and what the expected out come should be.
Hi Nelson,
Examples add great clarity! I like the idea of the photos.

Hi Tracie,
You are right! Students need to know on Day 1 exactly what is expected of them.

i find that by showing students examples of what they will be doing you can get them very exited about the class and also allows the student to have a good idea of what the expectations are for the term. I like to use photos taken from previous classes showing the students the work done by the students during that time. I also take pictures during their term and show them what they have donde during the class and how much they are progress.
It's important to provide students with clear expectations at the very beginning of the course.
