late assignments
Some teachers do not accept late assignments, I think it's unrealistic. Life happens
I struggle with this as an instructor. Most of my students are single parents who also work full time. However, I have noticed a relationship to students who procrastinate and then become "afraid" to come to class, thus making the situation worse. There needs to be a penalty for late work, however, I believe it should be accepted and if a student is chronic, it needs to be addressed individually so that they can develop skills so that they do not take this behavior into their new employment.
Hi Kay,
You have rules and I am sure you enforce them, and I know you are fair to all. Your students should appreciate this.

I will accept late assignments (within 24 hours) but the students know in the beginning that points will be taken off for mised or late assignments.
Hi Ramondo,
Great and fair approach to take. Life does happen, and I too will make allowance in extenuating circumstances.

Life does happen but I do the no late assignment policy unless you have contacted me prior explaining in detail that you will be late. This to me simulates my experience in the deadline driven production world. Dealing with clients and bosses from time to time life does interrupt but I make sure to notify the proper channels prior too and some excuses are plausible as in death in the family etc. If a student contacts me and lets me know what is going on I work with them as much as I can. My results from this coarse of action have been students more willing to be assertive and take responsibility...choosing a more proactive approach than just showing up to class empty handed.
Late: Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes not problem. There's no one answer.
Good? Yes. Late can be good, but only if the lateness justifies itself in some way - such as, the end product is better than if the deadline were met.
Deadlines for the sake of deadlines is an exercise for authoritarians, not for those who favor results over rules.
Bad - Some deadlines are immutable. Miss the broadcast time slot because the content is not ready? Surely not the place for give and take, deadlines must be adhered to or people get fired and/or lose their rep.
Not a problem - Some deadline are flexible by nature, and are they to keep pipelines from collapsing rather than being a static backbone that must be clung to in order to achieve success.
Hi MARISSA,
Life certainly does happen! As long as you are fair to everyone the rules you established are fine! Some instructors are certainly more understanding than others.

I do agree that it is unrealistic for teachers not to accept late assignments because life happens. Students have other responsibilities besides school work, because the majority of our students are either working part-time to support themselves or paying for their courses out of their pocket or are parents who have baby-sitting problems. I do accept late assignments, but I deduct 10%, as this is fair to other students who submitted their assignments on time
I agree. Late assignments can be taken in. I deduct 5 pts for each day the assignment is late.
I have found that the rules you have set work well for my class also. It is very important that you have rules listed so nobody is individually favored to. I think this method works great!
I do not accept late assignments and when I went through school, neither did my instructors. I give my students more than a fair amount of time to complete their assignments as well as constant reminders about due dates. I understand that things happen but that is life!
I don't particularly like accepting late assignments simply because a deadline is a deadline. No one cares about the reason why you didn't get the job done, they only care about whether its done or not.
Hi Terrie,
I concur, life happens! In the real world lateness is not going to be tolerated on a frequent basis. It has to be extenuating or else the employee will get fired.

Hi Julie,
It sounds like you have rules in place for late assignments, and you are fair to all students. Your students should really appreciate your leniency in this area.

In all seriousness Patricia, then explain the government shutdown. Deadlines were not hit and this is why this happened. You need to be leanant sometimes with students. Life gets in the way You could have an 18 yr old mother of 2 who had a sick child the night before.
Even in the real world there may be extenuating circumstances that allow for one missed deadline. While we are preparing students for the real world, they are still learning. I like to allow for some grace. That means they have one opportunity to turn in one late assignment with no penalty. It has worked for me.What do you think?
I do allow late assignments, however I deduct 5 points for every class that it is late. There is also a deadline in for which I will no longer accept late homeworks (usually midterm marks and the class before the last class). This prevents students from handing a stack of work in at te end of the semester.
Hi Barbara,
In the real world this type of behavior is not acceptable. Assignments are due on the due date and not there after. We must prepare our students for the real world.
Patricia Scales
I think late assignments should be excepted but only one day after due date of original assignment.
