It is important to follow up on the student's assignments so the student will be accountable for their part in the learning process. If the student knows you are going to follow up on their assignments they know you are serious about their work, and that they will want to have their assignments compledted for class to receive credit. By the student knowing that the instructor will correct their assignments, the student will be prepared for class. To ensure that the students are reading their assisgnments, at the very beginning of each class I have a five minutes writing session. In the five minute writing session the student writes as much as possible on what they learned in the reading asssignment from the night before. This also encourages the student to arrive to class ontime to participate and receive points for the five minutes writing session.

Hi Justin,
You are definitely on point! You fully understand why instructors need to follow up on students' work. Student must be held accountable, otherwise they take you for a joke.

Following up on assignments is important because it holds the student accountable for their work. If the student is held accountable, they will be more likely to have the assignment finished on time. It also relates the classroom to the workplace as they will be held accountable for their work out in the field.

I agree. I think we have expectations of our students, then is as instructors should set expectations for ourselves. I know when my students turn in work, I follow up with his/her assignments pretty quickly. They are anxious to know how they did. I also review graded assigments with every student.

I find it important because it lets the student know that you are serious about the grading system that is in place and also the assignments are used as an study guide when it comes time for the final. I also realize that you must set an time line on assignment because the same standards are used in the everyday workplace and everyone is accountable and responsible. This is one way to let them know that these same tools are used in everyday life.

Hi Yolanda,
Great way to prepare students! Having great habits are excellent to generate positive results. I love your last statement. A favorite of mine is hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard!

This is a good way of monitoring your students, which students are understanding the material and which students will need additional help before the test. I give my student a quiz, the first 10 minutes of class. This helps them before comforable with the test and encourages better study habits. Also, help them own the responsibility for completing assignments and project. A thought becomes an action, an action becomes a habit, a habit becomes your character.

Follow up assignments are a great way of monitoring your students. You know who is understanding the material and who needs help before the test. Mr. Haynes is right about using quizzes, I incoropate them in the first 10 minutes of classes. This help them to own the responisbility for completing their assignmentsand other projects.

I always have some students who are late to submit their assignments and I have to remind and work with them personally.

i always f/u..because it shows the students that im interested and care about them and i also gain respect

I realize that part of the way our courses progress is by continuing to build on the fundamental shared information of the textbooks.
If I fail to check-in with how the students comprehended the reading and homework assignments (prerequisites) before I get into the next layer of the materials I almost always have to back up and clarify some point during the discussion.... :) It is just easier and more efficient to follow up with them- get everyone all together and on the same point of understanding before we proceed.

Following up on student assignments lets the students know the work they do is important. While I do not provide a grade on every assignment in a group of tasks required for the week, I do randomly select items to grade. I comment on others so they know I've reviewed the work. I also explain upfront to the students that the group of assigned tasks is not a cafeteria plan. All tasks must be completed to receive credit for the work. They do not have the option to pick and choose which tasks they will do. All or nothing.

Following up on assignments speaks to the student in terms of becoming a professional, who can be relied on and it speaks to the instructor, in that he/she is reinforcing expectations that were clearly stated earlier in the course

Follow up is important as it shows that you are concerned with the students' progress. If they know you are sincere about helping them to succeed, they will be more likely to become engaged.

Hi Jack,
When students determine you are not serious about checking their work, they are not going to be as motivated to complete and turn in their work.

Hi Rodney,
Immediate feedback is key to ensure positive results. It is only fair to let students know how they are progressing within a timely manner.

Patricia Scales

I have found out that responding to students assignments quickly or in a timely fashions helps them to stay focus and ready to do the next assignments to get another good grade or to increase their grade.

so they will know that you are serious about their answers and that they will need to answer the ?

Hello,
I think that it is very important to follow up on assignments and readings because it helps students better themselves in your course. If you are not correcting issues as early as possible then students will continue to make them.

Teaching an accelerated class attendance and on-time assignments are critical. The way I handle this is to allow one day (Wed.) after school for students to make-up/turn in work. I grade their homework that was missed with a 10% penalty for being late. Test are also made up. If the student does not show up on the make-up day a zero will be given for that work not turned in late. No exceptions are allowed.
