Agreed, is there a university wide problem with locking the door and letting students in when there is a break in the class activity?
Hi Kevin,
They are disruptive. These students should be penalized in some way. My student has a tardy and early departure policy.

Hi Tasha,
It is an old strategy, and it works. I give a participation grade as well. If they are not there to participate they lose points.

I have an issue with students leaving before class ends. I hadn't thought of giving a daily quiz to ensure they stay til the end. Thanks for the brilliant idea!!!
The problem with those who are leaving early or coming in late also disrupt the learning of other student
Hi Rick,
Instructors should not tolerate the late/early epidemic, just as the new instrutors aren't. At my institution, we have a policy on being late and leaving early. The student has to make up 1 hour for being late and/or leaving early, and the student can not be exempt from the final exam with tardies and early departures. The policy works beautifully.

Being very late to class and leaving early was an epidemic at this college, but I have noticed it changing because the current instructors (who are relatively new) are not putting up with it. Giving lab time at the first of class helps with keeping students engaged till the end. (also keeps disruption down for starts of lecutres)...quizzes at the end of class also forces them to stay, or it's a zero....RB
Hi Kym,
I've had success with allowing my students to be exempt from the final exam if they had both an "A" average and perfect attendance. They make it a point to get to class on time everyday and not leave early. This works beautifully.

I don't have a strategy for getting them there on time and would also like one. However, the same kind of thing might work... a quiz at the start of class. I might try that because once they are there my students don't tend to leave early.
Another option might be to say that I will only take homework in the first 15 minutes of class, other wise it is considered late and 10 points come off for every 15 minutes after the start of class. That might be an incentive.
