Focus on the unfocused

If you are presentated with a student who has a low attention span, try to incorporate class projects and make that student project leader or manager of the assignment. Once that students has some responsibilites, he or she will be more willing and receptive to the new found role.

Hi Bruce,
Rapport building is a plus in education. Students do not want to disappoint their instructors with whom they have developed a rapport with. Students will do their due diligence to do their very best.
Patricia

I agree that this is a good strategy. However, other students may resent this if it is your only strategy.

Another way to help a student who has a low attention span is to make a personal connection with him or her.

Once the student has a relationship with you as an instructor, they will want to please you.
