Hi Kimberly,
Get something set up. It will mean a lot to your students because you did it for them! Students love guest speakers. They are so inspiring.
Patricia

Hi Carlos,
As stated in a previous emails, guest speakers are fantastic.
Patricia

Hello Carlos,
Guest speakers are fabulous, but GRADUATE guest speakers are even better The students love hearing from one of their very own. It gives the students great motivation.
Patricia

Hi Patricia,
I've even used students that had a similar problem to talk to the student who was wanting to quit.
Patricia

Hi Rodney,
It is good when the students can see if he/she did it, then I can do it too!
Patricia

I really like this idea. It will allow the student to understand that everyone was in their position at one point in time. This shows them that they can do this and make it happen just like the guest speaker did. We are all human and if we work hard we can do anything.

I use guest speakers all the time. However, I have never equated them with helping potentially drop students.

I use speakers to relate to the course material and to give students a real-life perspective. I will, in the future, look at using speakers in assisting students that may be in the process of dropping.

it will encourage students who are frustated in class due to outside problems like family problems, financial issues, child care, etc. I do plan to have a guest speaker for every class i teach in order to motivate my students and help them reach their goal.

i strongly agree that a guest speaker; especially a gratuate student who had to struggle with their outside problems can really make a difference in those students who are in the same situation.

I had other instructors invite my class to listen to the guest speaker and it really helped students relate. I personally need to include inviting guest to my class because it is a good resourse to use.

I actually had a guest speaker come in my class 2 days ago. He was in the area because of work so he decided to stop by. Just being in front of the class had a huge impact on my class. You could see some of the students excitment literally come out of them. It's a great benefit because the guest speaker knows exactly what the class is going through and has experienced similar situations(positive or negative). They can provide words of wisdom that may help the class. Overall I feel this has a great impact on the class.

I feel that guest speakers can really encourage students to keep reaching for the goal they have set. I encourage my students that when they are finished with their course to stop by and speak to the new group of students to encourage them. It also opens up a question and answer session for the students. They can hear from someone else what potential employers are looking for and what they expect from those that they hire, and the importance of learning the hands on skills that are required to perform the job functions that are required of them.

Usually a guest speaker can really motivate the students who are really serious about their course work.

I have had several speakers to visit my class. I believe that it really encouraged the students who were trying their best to complete the course.

I have found that having guest speakers really boost students morale. It is important to find guest speakers that are in the same field that the students are involved in because it allows them to see that their are sucess stories. I will say that you need to make sure that you know what the guest speaker is going to speak about. I made the mistake of inviting someone that was refered to me and they did not look professionally or speak very positive.

Using guest speaker reinforce things that the instructor lectures about but allow the student to obtain information from other professional individual working in the field to give them a overall view of what to expect as well as their expericence when in school.

Hello Christina,
I've seen where guest speakers, especially graduate guest speakers, really motivate and inspire students. Why do you think you do not see this type of excitement from your continuing ed students?
Patricia

I have only had one guest speaker in all the years I have taught continuing ed students. Honestly, it did not seem to make a difference. However, the module information says that this can help frustrated students. Especially if the guest speaker is a former student.
