I keep the students seperated, they can't sit next to or across from each other.
I agree if you have the space and can place a space between students it will lessen their ability to cheat off their neighbors test or paper.
there are many ways to reduce cheating such as seating students far apart in the room, assigning different test questions to each students, etc. however, the most effective way to reduce cheating is to make sure your class is prepared for their test and that you've provided the knowledge and review necessary for success.
I will spread the students out and I create 2 versions of the test. I also stay in the room and monitor the students. This also allows them to come to me for questions easily.
To help eliminate cheating I try to eliminate the opportunity. Assigned seats during tests, using multiple tests, and essay questions helps to eliminate the temptation.
Thats a great idea so that the likelihood of your neighbor having the same test is reduced and cheating would be minimized. Elaine
we have small classes and that helps to keep an eye and also people are more empowered to do well on tests. definately remove items from desks!
Because of how the desks are arranged in the classroom it is impossible to seat students apart from each other. I have developed two versions of the test. The students are made aware of A and B versions because they must note this on their answer sheets. This gives them information that test varies but also lowers the temptations to cheat because of the different versions.
This is the main thing that I also do to prevent students from cheating. I watch the students the entire time during the test.
By instilling the importance of the consequence of cheating, you can reduce the opportunity for cheating.
I find that rearranging the seeting plan has helped. I also make it a point to be seen at all times by walking around the room.
Build a relationship of trust with the student, learn their name, ask them about their goals in the career. Establishing a connection, to me, is the best way to prevent cheating. I work to earn their trust and respect so that those foundations prevent their desire to disappoint me with their actions and choices.
It is very important to circulate around the classroom during the exam to discourage cheating and make them sit in a different seat for the exam. My former drug calculation instructor used to have students rolling up their sleeves, remove their hats, and have us seat in a skip row fashion. She used to do a quick inspection of everyone palms. She used to give a little speech about helping to save our future patients' lives.
I seperate the students and I will walk the room to keep an eye on the students. This doesn't allow a student to cheat.
Jeff, this is a good idea, though makes more work for you. I think it's disappointing that we (collectively) have to do things such as this.
I tend to trust, too much maybe sometimes.

One way that helps me with students that are thinking about cheating is moving towards the back of the classroom. They can't see me but I am watching them.
Provide alternate forms of the test in addition to spreading students out.
The way I plan on reducing cheating on a quiz is having different quizzes given to students. Such as having three slightly copies of the quiz given out to students who are sitting next to each other.
Create a test in two versions, and give each version to students sitting next to each other.
I have given different versions of the same test to avoid cheationg, I have walked around the room while students were taking the test. I have discussed strategies for preparing for tests and quizes.
