in order to reduce cheating in my class i would first create a statement in my syllable explaining the consequenses of cheating..then i would keep students apart from each other on exam dates. I would also sit in back of the class and observe students from the back. Make sure that their desk is free of notes, calculators or any other source where they can cheat from.

My written tests are based on my practical test. My practical test are worth more than my written test so I explain to my students that this is a great oppertunity to look at how they did on the written test before they take their practical & review any area in which they could have done better. Because I clearly emphasise that both the written test & the practical test is based on methods of production and that all of the homework assignments included methods of production, the students are already prepared. All they realy need is to review their homework.

I use different versions of the test whenever I give a test also.

I use different versions of my test. I also let them know ahead of time that cheating will be a reason for dismissal from the class and possibly the program.

That is what I use when I give test. I use at least three different versions of the test depending on how large the class is, along with monitoring.

I like this method. It works very well, especially if you intermingle short answers within the test.

One way you can reduce cheating is by showing up early to class on exam days. I try to make sure I am the first person in the classroom or am the one to unlock the door so a student's chance of "setting up" their cheating scheme is limited.

Hi Dixie,
More work for you, but it does deter cheating, and students must know their wording in order to answer effectively.
Patricia

Hello Erin,
I've discovered students are not given a reason to cheat, they simply do it. What do you mean you give your students no reason to cheat?
Patricia

For practical lab exams, I give my students no reason to cheat. They're all in school to learn set skills and by cheating you have not learned that skill. I let them know that sure they can cheat but then they are cheating them selves out of a learning experience and there education. School is for making mistakes and learning how to prevent them not doing everythingperfect the first time. Cheating isn't learning it may look, taste perfect but it isn't a honed skill.

I wish having space among the students were an option. Most of my classes are rather tightly packed. My moving around does help, though.

The most effective answer I've found so far is also the most time-consuming: essay responses. While a student might glimpse a detail or two from another student's paper, that student still has to make use of the detail in a coherent fashion. Unfortunately, these take a lot longer to grade!

Hi Caroline,
It works. It certainly minimizes cheating.
Patricia

Hi Anna,
These actions certainly minimize cheating. Great that you pointed out students sitting directly behind another student.
Patricia

If applicable, I spread the students out so that no student is sitting right next to or directly behind another student. I also walk around the room and stand at the back of the room.

I spread the students out and walk around the class during the test

Hi Stanley,
Super, you make it known up front, there is no need to cheat because your neighbor has a different version.
Patricia

I USE AN A-FORM,B-FORM,AND C-FORM OF SAME TEST MATERIAL.I LET THE STUDENTS KNOW THIS.IT WORKS VERY WELL.
