Hi Stephen,
I like how you phrased that, BEST HONEST efforts! Students need to understand that cheatig is detrimental to their success, and cheating will eventually catch up with them.
Patricia

In the field of health care, it is easy to introduce early on the role of ethics as it is included in our licensure laws and obviously has great consequences when it comes to billing, Medicare fraud, etc.
Cheating in class can lead to poor habits in the field and that can ultimately lead to a therapist losing their license or a patient losing their life so there is little to be gained by cheating. I outline several experiences of nurses I have known who have lost their licenses and basically set the tone how it is so not worth it. If you don’t understand something, come and see me. I am more than willing to assist you in achieving your goals through extra effort on my part as long as you give me your best honest efforts.

Everyone is right where there is a will there is a way to cheat. Students become very creative when it comes to new ways of cheating in class, my thought is why can't they use their creative ablities for good learning skills and not cheating. It would be so benefial to everyone all the way around.

There will always be students who are unprepared, but making yourself seen during the test or quiz will allow the students to see that you are moving around. Therefore giving them little oppurtunity to cheat.

Creating multiple versions of the same test. Exam View is a great program that you can build a test in and when you want to print the test it gives you the option to choose how many versions to print and if you want to scrable questions, answers, and sections. It will even print a question map if you need it. I also assign seats after the students have sat down and are ready for their test. This stops them from writing on their desk or stashing cheat sheets somewhere on the desk or chair prior to class.

we have to different versions of the test so the students get either versiona or b and cannot cheat

Hi George,
I've known instructors that would assign seats during testing to curtail cheating.

Hi Michael,
Technology has really made cheating easier, just think cell phones and the internet.
Patricia

One recent cheating that was brought to my attention by another instructor was students were placing their cell phones on top of tests (with camera facing the test) and scanning answeres or questions.

Obviously, eliminating cell phones from the classroom helps that issue, but I hadn't considered that the students would be doing that until I was made aware it was happening.

By seating the students in way that instructor can monitor them easy and having control on the class room during a quiz, that way the students will see that better not cheating

Hi Jonathan,
I love that phrase, and it is so much truth to it! Cheaters should be reprimanded without a shadow of a doubt.
Patricia

Have the students spead out in class, so they are not sitting so close together. Make sure everything but a pencil and test is on the floor. Make sure the instructor is watching in one spot.

Let them that cheating will not be tolerated in any way. Winners don't cheat, and cheaters don't win!

Students need to be aware that the instructor knows what they are doing. This will disuade students from cheating because they feel the instructor may catch them. Moving students while taking examinations so that there is space between students helps; also creating examinations that have questions that need to be answered by essay helps as well - students can't copy paragraphs and can't copy paragraphs onto cheat sheets (or the bottoms of their shoes) when they don't know exactly will be asked.

Hi Norma,
Great response! Students act as though they do not know a lot about plagiarizing. I concur that proper training should be provided to all students so that they fully understand what is meant by plagiarizing.
Patricia

Cheating in the "online" environment is extremely tricky, and you have to have systems in place to hone in on the cheating factors.

Technology is key for online instructors to reduce the opportunity to cheat. One technology application is "TurnItIn." TurnItIn is a system that houses submitted assignments and databases of internet sites, and compares the work submitted, and identifies "similarities" and quantifies similarities to produce a score of how much content is the student's, and how much content was plagiarized or unoriginal.

Another way to reduce cheating in the online environment is to have "case studies" and to have data-bases of questions that change each time a new class session(semester / quarter) would start for a class that is easily to cheat (those classes with standard answers: Math courses, Coding Courses, etc.)

Holding students accountable for what it means to plagiarize, and how to avoid it, and why it is so important to have original thought. Using authentic assessment, and having authentic tasks for students to create is another way to reduce cheating. Providing students with training about proper citation style, and giving them the support they need prior to the test may also reduce cheating.

Getting to know your students, and building that rapport (as mentioned in this training) is also a way to have students respect the process, respect you, and respect the learning.

I was told by my previous campus director students will cheat but if you are up and moving around there is less chance htey will

Hi Mary Lou,
Computerized tests really help with cheating, but I have caught students cheating on computerized tests too.
Patricia

it is often pretty easy to catch students in the act of cheating. the problem is how to confront without the situation blowing up in your face. many times a non traditional student will take the accusation as personal and become confrontational. worse yet, administration may not support you unless there is truely concrete evidence. this is a grey zone in the classroom which needs to be ealt with very carefully. i wish there was a concrete answer.

Have computerized tests.

Test on applications are more project oriented

have students prepare a test
