Have the students clear their tables of all items, have the students sit at their own table (if possible), walk around the room the entire test, be extra observant, and make sure the student understand the consequences of cheating from the onset.

I ask them to remove all materials from the desk and also place their cell phones where I can see them but where they can not use them.

Hi To-Mei,
Students love it and appreciate it when they are given a review sheet.

I like the idea of haveing multiple exams. I might have to try that one. One thing I do is I make them clear their desks and remove all bags/backpacks and books to another area of the classroom. This makes it easier for me to observe them as well as giving them less hiding places to put cheat sheets.

I always have several versions of the test. Students who sit next to each other will get a different version. Also I will hand out a review sheet and discuss it before the test so the student will know what to expect.

One way to reduce student cheating is by making different versions of tests. I have even had the same test but label the test version A or B, students then will be fearful to cheat off their neighbor paper.

We make different versions of a test, but when I'm pressed for time and can't make the different test I tell them they all have different versions, by writing the letter A in one color and B and C in another color..

Hi Jo Ann,
Smart move, this is really easy to do now with the various test software that is available along with just good old cut, paste.

Hi Paulette,
Wow, with each student having a different version to reduce cheating this is even more effective than having 2 or 3 versions of the test.

Hi DARRON,
These are good tactics to utilize to minimize cheating.

In large classes I have given the same test except, the questions and answeres are in different order.

I prepare multiple version of the test , so each student gets a different version. Or I scrabble my choices.

We utilize short answer essays that require the student to explain concepts and provide examples of application. They are also presented with case studies to analyze to show relevance to what they are learning.

Is walking around the room a good thing to do because in the course it said that that only stress the student more. You should stand in the back of the class in order to see if students are cheating.

By walking the classroom during the exam. another way might be to leave one space(vacant seat) between each student, review material reinforce the benefits of studying, and if all else fails reassign the whole class in different seating

When my class size permits I will space my students out to reduce the chance of any student looking on another students test.

Some of the ways to reduce student cheating are provide at least two version of each test that you administer. Students that are sitting next to each other on exam days will not have the same tests. Another way to reduce cheating is to try and have ample space, if space permits, between each students so that no one can get "wondering eyes"!

Thanks

Yes, I walk around before the test and make sure students have turned off their cell phones and all electronics are off and put away. I am very clear with them not to touch any of those things while testing. I like to walk around through out the test. I also like to use different versions of a test, as well as watch them closely the whole time. I also always tell them before every test that I have a zero tolerance policy for cheating.

Spreading them out. Printing 3 versions of the test. All cell phones on the floor. Cheating is a choice and they have to decide what is important to them. Going out in the field shows if you know the skills to do the job or not.

That is a really good idea and one that I have heard about from other professors. I can be really easy to do on math or science exams where you just change some numbers in the calculations to make them come up with different answers using the same metodologies.
