Hi Harold,
Have you make the mistake of not writing down procedures? Written information is great for many reasons. How detail oriented are you when it comes to keeping records? What type of records do you keep, if any? Your thoughts are right on point!
Patricia
WRIGHT DOWN YOUR PROCERES, AND AND KEEP RECORD IN DETAIL AND IF YOU, ADD MORE INFO. APPLY IT TO NEXT CLASS TO INPROVE YOUR TEACHING....
I think that the biggest mistake is not preparing for class. And the way to avoid this is to make a lesson plan. The instructor should also have a plan B because sometimes the equipment in the class dose not work.
The common instructr mistakes are the following:
1. not being prepared for the assigned class
2. trying to be friends with students vs being there instructor.
3. not setting guidelines in the classroom.
4. talking about thier personal lives with the students.
5. not asking their peers or immediate supervisors for help.
being human and willing to accept a mistake making things right will go a long way
I find the best way to avoid these common mistakes is to prepare more information than will be needed for the class and then practice delivering it. As instructors, we are here to facilitate the students’ success and keeping that in mind when preparing for class helps to reduce or eliminate mistakes.
At some point in our career we’ve all had those “been there, done that” experiences. I find when I tell student about the mistakes I’ve made it seems to relax them and make me more believable. I tell my students no one knows it all. When I get a question I can’t answer we make it a class project to find the answer. I believe knowing how to find information is as important as the information itself.
Hi Philippe,
Punctuality is important on the instructor's part too! How punctual are you for your classes? I believe in leading by example. If you expect your students to be on time, then you should be on time.
Patricia
What I like to do is mentally rehearse the days lesson plan. That with having my daily checklist not only avoids these mistakes but builds more confidence in my delivery
Not ready for the class on time.
Hi Ronald,
It is just natural to think preparation whenever you are an instructor. Students appreciate instructors being prepared.
Patricia
I tend to agree with most of the repies. The more we prepare for class the greater the chance we will have the topic covered effectivly so the student feels that they are being prepared for the topic of diccussion.
Hi Eric,
No one has all the answers. Your students do appreciate you trying to find the answers. Keep working hard for your students.
Patricia
Do not try to have all the answers, If I don't know a answer I will let my students know, but I will have the answer the next day for them.
Hi Joshula,
Pit falls should be tracked and worked upon as well. Continue to try your hardest. As long as you teach, you will make mistakes. Do the very best that you can.
Patricia
The course suggests keeping notes from one year to the next, and I think this is a good way to keep track of pit falls. But if you are a beginning teacher I think you should look at mistakes as learning tools. Something that develops as a mistake should be turned around in the class to ones advantage (if possible). Explained or taught/learned as part of the course.
Joshula
Hi Matthew,
It is very important to share with students on Day 1, the sole purpose for taking the course. Students are very curious, and they are full of why's.
Patricia
Usually the first day, I tend to have everyone mention where they are from, why they are in the school, and where do they hope to go from here. This helps a rapport with the students. I also explain why the class I teach (a history class) is important for them as students of culinary as some may wonder how the class will help them. This helps get their attention and helps explain to them why they should pay attention. I also tend to mention my past experiences within the area we study in the class (Latin America) as although my years of teaching experience may not be as much as some, my experiences help explain why I have an understanding in the region and in the information they will learn.
Hi Brian,
It is always a good idea to make a note of your mistake to avoid it from happening again. Written notes tend to work well.
Patricia
Hi Marvin,
As educators, we must observe our timid students closely. We do not want any of our students to fall through the cracks.
