names
I have problems remembering all my students names in a 3 week class. I am up front with my students about this. I tell them it's a mental thing and not to be hurt by it. I also tell them that while I might forget their name I will always remember their face.
Hi Chhayaben,
Students love it when you know their name. Knowing a student's name alone makes a students feel special and important.

Also there is really good trick. I always keep class roaster with me, so at least i have name of the students are available. Whenever i have to ask question( first few weeks of class), i look at the roaster and say the name. i know that at least students will say right or wrong answer and we will know who is that student. it is good practice to start with.
I have same problem. I can remember face but not names easily. But by 14 years of teaching experience, i can say that students wants them to call by their name. By doing this, they know that for us they are not just part of job but their answer and view is important for the class.
The best way to look at is that just put our self in place of students and then think. It will explain us a lot.
Hi stephan,
Most students will have patience, and they are even more receptive because you have an humble spirit about things.
Patricia
I am also upfront with the students; I tell them to be patient with me and not take it personal. I call on them during the lecture to answer questions and that seems to help me.
Hi Shani,
I've even known instructors to use name tents for the first two weeks to help with memorizing student names.
Patricia
You have to make it a challenge for yourself because students really do like and respect you more when you know them by name. Try to remember teh seats or secretly make a seating chart to remember their names.
I would not even bother using the remembering a face comment. What if you can't remember the face at some point? I would simply tell them you do your best to learn names and do feel it is important, but a challenge and leave it at that.
Regards,
Scott
Hi Stacey,
You should really start. These tactics are extremely helpful, they work.

Hi Helen,
I make sure to learn every student name by the time the period is over. I make sure to get 100% by going around the room and reciting each student's name.
Patricia
I've done this and really like it. I also go around the room saying the students name until I can do it without any help. It usually takes about 3 passes. But I like to get them involved as well as they don't learn each others names readily either.
I have a horrible time with remembering names. We get a few new students every term. So, my veterans I know. At least I don't have to memorize 24 at a time. I work very hard to remember. I have never tried any of these techniques but may start.
Hi Stephen,
I also like to repeat the student's name to myself five times.
Patricia
I am very fortunate and can remember names very easily. However, maybe doing a simple name mnemonic game may be helpful to introduce and remember people and their names. ie. Donna the Dancer, Johnny the Jumper, Cathy likes Cooking. It is a nice ice breaker and puts a mental cue in your mind for the learner as well as gives him/her individuality.
Hi Luciano,
What have you tried to help remember names? Here are some effective strategies:
1) Make it a point to say the student's name aloud at least three times the first day.
2) Focus on something distinctive about the student.
3) Break down the student's name into syllables, then think about the sound of each syllable.

I have problems remembering all my students names. I just have a hard time with it.
Hi Rhonda,
Name tents are extremely helpful. A great way to help memorize student names.

I'm a visual person, so on the first day of class I like to give a quick and fun project for the students to complete and turn in. We'll have a review/critique of the project before turning it in and I'll keep these projects because it will allow me to review them and remember which student did what.
Sharlen,
I think this is a fun and neat activity to make every student in the room feel important; I may just try it this term. I had a professor in college who handed out sheets of construction paper and crayons/markers to everyone in the class. He then asked us to write down our names and decorate the sheet of paper with pictures or words of our favorite things. After everyone was done with their paper, he then lined 10 or so of us up in front of the chalkboard and took a picture of everyone holding their name tag. He used it as a way to commit our names to memory and then he also had a fun keepsake to remember all of his students by after they had completed his class.
Fortunately, I happen to remember names quickly and so far my classes have been relatively small. Last term, I walked around the first two classes and addressed each student by their first name. I got a few strange looks, but after telling them I was simply trying to remember their names, they usually smiled in return.
