Hi Patricia,
I like your list! I can tell you are well prepared for class, and you lead by example.
Patricia

I try to learn everyone's name by class number 2 that way they know i take my job seriously and consider them an important part of my job and class

1. Be on time/ early
2. Be organized
3. Learn their names
4. Be specific and consistent in expectations

Be a positive role model

One important issue to me is taking the time to grade and make positive comments on the homework. If I don't take the time to acutally read it, then I have stripped the assignment of its importance. I had a student once say, "You actually read these don't you?" When I said of course I do. She told me that I was the only teacher who had done that.

Hi Rebecca,
I concur! You tend to act based on the way you are dressed.
Patricia

Hi Cheri,
The first day will definitely determine the entire grading period. On the first day let students know exactly what is expected. Be nice, but firm.
Patricia

I think by making the first day impression goes along way, give them ground rules and sticking to them. Give them all their materials, always being organized and learning something abouteach e student helps

I agree with Sharon. Showing a positive and "can do" attitude to the class tends to immediately set the stage for future classroom study challenges. It makes the atmosphere, and certainly the instructor, less intimidating and more open for questions and assignment discussion in general.

You can create a positive, professional image and establish early control by clearly stating that you have high expectations for the class. I tell my students that I likely have a higher expectation of them than they do of themselves and it sets the bar that everyone can be successful if they work at it.

In addition, because of the way I setup my class assignments, it provides them with a clear view of what is required of them and how they can be successful. I've had students who are known to be under acheivers in other classes, be interactive and work hard in mine because of the challenge. It challenges them without threatening them and most students have responded very positively to that challenge.

I teach business course, so I try to dress the part. A professional business suit goes a long way to form credibility and also to help pattern student behavior when they graduate and join the profession. I think I also teach more professionally when I am dressed professionally, as well.

Hi Beverly,
You are on point! In order to get respect, you first have to give it.
Patricia

Hi Jerry,
Networking is important in our area! I always tell my students you never know who you may be sitting next to in class. It can be the person who may hire you for your career.
Patricia

During the initial class, ask students to give a brief bio of their background and experiences. The try to relate their comments to what will be presented in the class or identify the value of 'networking' for future opportunities. If each students is provided the opportunity to share...it can instill a sense of enrollement.

First of all, I think one must LOOK professional, then ACT professional. I feel that develops a respect from the students and I give respect in return. A positive instructor image is created by being well prepared for class, present information in logical order, and treating all students with honesty and fairness. This module REMINDED me of the importance of a positive instructor image.

I believe one of the main ways an instructor can create a positive image for there students is to be available for help. I have seen recently a great deal of respect from my students, because I take the time to answer questions even when class has finished. Offering help and showing that you want to be there and help the students succeed shows that this is not just a job.

Hi Teresa,
You are on point! We should make it a practice to be on time and prepared every day. Remember, we are being judged.
Patricia

The first day of class you must be on time in fact be early, be prepared, and ready to start and learn the students names as soon as possible. You will want to dress and act professional from day one so you can expect it from your students

Hi Billie,
I can tell you believe in giving your students your very best! This is simply what we all should strive to do daily!
Patricia

Creating a positive image is not only staying upbeat but actually looking for the best in each student. Focusing on what is best for thier learning experience and success by providing the very best presentation of yourself that is possible.

Hi Don,
Yes, it is crucial to be professional at all times. You never know who is watching you. Our students go every where.
