My ideas about creating a positive instructor image would be to listen to my students,be fair & introduce humor into my lectures. Demonstrating knowledge & technique in well thought out daily lesson plans so as to inspire my students in their own production.

BY showing up early for my class and making certain that the room is organized and stocked for the days lesson I demonstrate tot he students that I care about thier outcome in class that day. It shows that I am a professional instructor and understand the challenges they will face that day.

I believe that I create a positive instructor image by posting the contents of my class as soon as it is available. I also attach an email introducing myself and informing the students as to what they will need to be successful on the first day and there after. These things can and do include everything from a sharpie and thermometer to notecards with the recipes handwritten on them.

Be in class on time, ready to teach, and prepared to help the students learn. Be ready to answer questions before and after class. Be organized, so I am calm and in a good mood when students enter the classroom. Be positve with them, welcome them into the room warmly, and let them know I am here to help them reach their goals.

Hi Mariann,
I like you ideas of having a positive instructor image. I can tell you are a great person and you care...you even mentioned the custodian in your response. Custodians are often looked down up. Thank you for seeing people as people and not giving them royal treatment because of prestigous positions/titles. I can tell you are a fine instructor. I enjoy working with "down to earth" people, such as yourself. You and I will make a great team.

Act and treat all students with support and respect. Treat all nursing staff and interdisciplinary staff with respect. Dress and act professional Follow all hospital and campus policies. Set an example by dressing properly for the field that you are in. Treat everybody as a person from the custodian on up. Network with all staff. Set extra time after lunch for students who need extra help learning skills. Also I found some students need extra help in math. I also set up time after lunch for this. Try to be approachable to all students. Do not show favortism.

Hi Angelina,
I am sure you have noticed both items are unspoken you have listed. Professionalisim is judged by our actions (unspoken) as well as being verbally expressed.
Patricia

Hi Louise,
It sounds like you have sat in one of my classes. I use the same approach, and students love it. It is an approach that is very up lifting and positive. Students are really pumped to believe that they will only succeed, and this is what we want.

Organization is the single most important aspect in regard to image. In the Culinary field we use a term called “Mis en Place” which means a place for everything and everything in its place. When an instructor gives a clear and well organized cooking demonstration he or she gains student respect.

I try to establish that it is quite possible to do well in my class. In fact, I am the opposite of "no one gets an A". I tell my students that if they come to class, pay attention and do the assignments, it is harder to get an F than a B --- and if they do get an F, they really worked at it! By letting the students know that success is possible, and within their control, it helps create a positive image for the class and the instructor.

1Be on time
2.Dress appropiately.Your clothing should be clean, neat and pressed.

Hi Marc,
Awesome response! I can tell you have a positive instructor image. I know your students look up to you.

Be professional, be positive, and be careful! The way you look, how you interact with your students, and your approach to teaching will make a difference!

Demonstrate physically that you are engaged in the class with enthusiasm, vocal inflection, gesticulations. Provide robust feedback with your facial expressions and other non-verbal cues.
It's a performance, yes, but will not come across without an underpinning of honesty and sincerity.

Also, demonstrate that you are engaged in the world, that you care about things. You want to show your students that you are alive, imaginative, curious, a thinker. Bring current events, items you are reading, etc. into class discussion. Keep it dynamic and always make it relevant.

Hi Mary,
Yes, let your students know that they are professionals in the making, and they should behave professionally at all times. Remember, our students are mocking us.
Patricia

I dress and act professionally, and show respect for the students from the very beginning of the class. I remind the class we are all working on being IT professionals and that seems to help the students interact more respectfully.

Yes, I agree with all of the thoughts here, being consistently prepared, being accurate with clear, detailed, organized assingments (with no typos, etc.), being consistently on time, on track, managing the classroom consistently...all these things matter and help inspire confidence in the classroom learning experience and enviornment.

Be who you expect your students to be!

Hi Peggy,
Wow, I like your take on a positive instructor image! I can tell you are a true professional, and you lead by example. Continue to be a great role model for students.
Patricia

I use humor when I make mistakes. I show them that while I am a professional I am a person too. Sometimes starting the class with a discussion of some big news items the students begin to unwind and share their opinions. I say hello to them in the hallways and make the effort to bring the "personal" touch to my classes.

It does take a lot of planning in advance but as we progress these skills become a part of who we are as faculty and administration.
