Very important in all we do in life to get to where we need or think we should be. There is someone watching at all times and who knows you may be the choosen one to get to the next step in goals and life....
If you do not act as a professional the students will not either. Role modeling is important
Exactly, we tell our students that they must present a professional image. We go into detail as to what HR departments expect when students go in for interviews. We are industry modeled and students need to exhibit both the appearance and the professionalism that is expected.
I tend to look at students that need 'a friend'. Sometimes we may be the only on they feel comfortable with talking to and I have been able to adress particular behaviors that otherwise may have been difficult.
Support should be unity. As instructors we must defend in the eyes of the student and discuss with our peers in private
I always tell my employees and students dress for the part you want.
A professional distance restates that you are in charge, and the individual with whom the students look to for instruction, not someone to become their friend. The instructor will provide the guidance professionally and academically that students are seeking and require.
Shows the student that you are a professional, that all class mates are treated the same. Very important for all to see that all are treated the same when it comes to management.
Hi Robyn,
Instructors should make it a point to have professional dress. The instructor's dress should be at a level higher than the students. Anyone should walk into the building and should be able to quickly distinguish between the instructor and the student, based on dress. We need to look the part!

Hi Kelley,
Yes! It is important for everyone to be on the same page. The support system of the institution should be very strong. If a person does not support the system, then that person is employed at the wrong place. Unity is key!
Patricia
Hi Yolanda,
What things do you do to maintain a professional image?
Patricia
I agree! Students are always watching us and looking to us for what is acceptable behavior. They also see and hear the way we do or don't support our fellow faculty, policies and our administration. When instructors show support of the system, it encourages students to do the same. To me, that is part of maintaining a professional image.
Maintaining a professional distance from students is important because instructors are there in a professional capacity rather than to be friends. If you get too friendly with the students, it could hamper your ability to either be totally objective or completely fair.
You want the students to respect you.
The one aspect that this has not covered is dressing professionally. It is an important part of the respect students give their Instructors.
Hi Lisa,
I like what you tell your students. It makes more sense to them, and it seems more real whenver it is thought of from this perspective.
Patricia
Hi Rochelle,
You have to be strong and maintain a sense of professionalism, yet be caring to not get drawn into students life's problems. Listen compassionately, offer advice, seek expert help if there is a need, and remember you are the instructor.
Patricia
Hi Bill,
The instrutor has to be in full control to not allow befriending of a student because it can also be a fast process. Draw a line and DO NOT let students cross it.
Patricia
Hi Andrea,
Sharing practical involvements outside the classroom can be very beneficial to students. Students need to know about the real world. An instructor's outside personal life should not be shared with students. It is very unprofessional.
Patricia
well studetns want to tell you all there problems so if you keep a professional distance then they will depend on each other rather than you and you wont get sucked into lifes problems
