You need to operate your class room as if they are in a work setting. It is important that they respect their instructors/employers.
Hello James,
Yes, conducting ourselves in a professional manner will cause 'more' students to respect us than 'not'! We set the table for our interactions with students.
Hello Instructor Scales,
Maintaining a professional distance from students is important because it helps students to respect their instructor/mentor. The relationship of instructor-student is a professional one and should remain that way. The relationship will remain that way if the instructor conducts him/herself in a professional manner.
It will allow for easier means of equal treatment throughout the class length.
It also allows you to set examples of professional ethics etc.
Hi Mark,
An instructor should never befriend a student. The friendship can be very risky.

Patricia
You need to conduct yourself in a professional manner
I totally agree that students are always watching.
Our students are looking at us every day and we need to set the proper image for them. We should be viewed as a roll model and our appearance should be one of a professional in our field. We need to interact with our students in a professional manner at all times.
Because if they get to comfortable they will expect favors
Because it draws the line between you and the student. You are not friends. They have their their friends, you have yours.
A Professional distance and image is not only important for the instructor-student relationship on the most basic of levels like trust, perception, chain of command, fairness but also any thing else is simply unethical. One can be a respected, liked, student focused, facilitator/instructor and mentor without being “buddies” with the adult student.
You have to keep the instructor and student relatationship in the class room. If you change this you will run into a respect issue.
favoritism should be avoided at all costs. This type of thing can affect the entire class adverversly
We are preparing students to enter into a professional world and do so by presenting a professional image themselves. They learn this through the interaction they have with instructors who maintain a professaional image. In the classroom environment, the instructor sets the stage for class management by delivering a professional image and maintaining appropriate distance from the students. Instructors are in a position of power. Maintaining professional distance is an ethical and moral obligation, as well as good professional practice.
follow all the rules be a role model.
if you get personal with student you can lose the respect they have for you
