many students at our school are at an impressionable age. Getting to chummy with them can initiate unwanted behavior. I try to have counseling sessions out in the open and usually with another professional nearby.
Hi Maureen,
I've experienced sometimes when they are a student they do not appreciate the strongness, but once they become successful they begin to sing a positive tune about the strongness.

Hi Jennifer,
Nicely stated! We are truly our students role models. They would love to be in our shoes or at least so they think...
Patricia
The students see you as the professional that you are. You have been in that field and have succeeded in it. They can look up to you and strive to get to where you are.
Students do respond to a strong but fair instructor. I have been teaching for many, many years. Graduates return and consistently thank me for being strong in my examples and teaching style!
The instructor must maintain a professional distance from their students or it is impossible to manage the learning process effectively. Students must respect the knowledge and skill possessed by the instructor; personal interaction has nothing to do with an instructor's skills set. the students are making a great sacrifice personally and financially to attend a career school and the instructor must give 100 % of their energies th the student's committment.
Yes constantly watched and reviewed. Remaining professional at all times is truly important no matter how difficult the situation. Lead by example, being someone they can look up too is important.
No matter if students are adults or youth, deep down they really don't want you to be their buddy. Instructors will have a much easier time dealing with challenging students or classroom issues if they look and act professional at all times. This is what students really want to see in their teacher/instructor, even if they suggest otherwise.

On three separate occasions I overheard students accusing other instructors of showing favoritism to certain some of their fellow classmates. The students complaining were typically well reserved and quiet in class. I make it point to give all students the same amount of my attention even if I have to call on the quieter students during class.
Hi Nancy,
Professional boundaries must be maintained in order to set standards. I understand exactly what you are saying. Surprisingly, some instructors will take students up on these invites...bad decision on the instructor's part.
Patricia
Hi Jay,
Generally, if you are professional students will respect you likewise, there is also a flip side to this as well...
Patricia
Hi Robert,
Professionalism correlates very high with respect. It's simple, if you are professional, students will respect you.
Patricia
I think if instructor becomes too close to students, they tend to share some stories & person stuff with students. I think it is very important to maintain distance with students.
You always need to maintain a professional image with students. Whenever letting this rule slide students will take advantage of the situation and you will be caught in the middle.

Conveys expectations to students that they could/should also act professionally. This should allow you to get a leg up on earning respect from your peers and students.
Students need to respect us if they're going to get the most valuable possible from the course.
Hi Maria,
I solely agree. Students will certainly respect you based on your professionalism or lack there of. I've seen this happen many times either good or bad.
Patricia
Maintaining a professional distance is one way of generating respect from the students.
Hi Christopher,
I think this is super! I certainly understand your perspective on this. Religion/Political Party are sensitive topics. It reminds me of having a professional email address and a personal email address.
