Hi Heidi-Jo,
Students get an idea as to how to act/behave in the professional world from us, therefore we must lead by example.
Patricia
Hi Cynthia,
You are on point! I often wonder what some instructors are thinking whenever they don't follow rules, policies, and procedures, but they expect the students to do so. Unreal...
Patricia
This is necessary to gain student respect and to be able to manage the class successfully.
It can be difficult to be an instuctor with adult students, epecially since they are studying to work in the same field that you do. I think some students don't understand why you cannot be their friend. I have had students invite me to baby showers, weddings, etc. and more recently ask to be by "friend" on Facebook. I have to tell them no, but I always explain why it is important to maintain our professional boundaries.
It is impotant to maintain a professional image so students will not only respect the instructor, but will also see view and respect the classroom as a professional entity. As instructors we should model professionalism at all times.
Yes, leading by example is following the guidelines, policies and procedures as we expect the students to do. That is a great way to establish professionalism
Yes, I agree. It also helps the students if they see that I am following the dress code as well
I find this to be true as well. We are judged by our apperance and how we conduct ourselves.
IT is always best to maintaine a respectful demenor in public.
This is true so it is best not to socialize in the same outside environments to leave less room for judgment by students
I find that to be true. Building a rapport with the students will eliminate distrust
It most important to be profeesional .
so that repect is established
Being professional shows the students how they should work in the "real world" settting
Hi Paul,
Do not hang out with your students. It is amazing what gets back to the institution. Remember, it is a small world...
Patricia
Hi Beverly,
Be friendly to your students, but do not befriend your students. Great difference...
Patricia
Hi Renee,
Rapport building is no doubt very important. Instructors need to work on building a rapport with every student. When a relationship is established between the instructor and the student, the student does everything in their power to not disappoint the instructor.
Patricia
Hi Sandy,
As a professional, you certainly should know the difference between being professional and unprofessional.
Patricia
Hi Rich,
You are absolutely correct! It is real simple, treat ALL students the same so that problems do not arise.
Patricia
I like to tell all of my classes about a class I took ten years ago. My Instructor was 102 years old. I learned more in that two hour lecture than I did the rest of the week. I hope I can teach until I'm 100!
