Thinking on Your Feet

Every class I have fluctuates in size. My outline for the class is suited for a big group. I have found that I tend to get through material faster with a smaller group. Instead, of looking as if I'm "unprepared" I've had to add assignments or projects on the fly to make up for the extra time.

Sponge material is good. I might also recommend creating 2-3 syllabi for the same course, each based on class size. You then utilize the syllabus that best corresponds to the number of students that you actually have enroll. With each syllabus, you will already have a master list of assignments that will utilize the entire class period for maximum learning outcomes.

I always make sure I have what is called sponge material. These are little projects or assignments that are basicly set up to take up that extra time with reinforcing the material that is presented. This sometimes add extra work but once you have them prepared for the class you just keep copies so that they are available when needed. Simple word searches that they can compete with each other, as far as be timed, has also helped to get some of those students engaged that really feel detached to the class. Great for vocabulary enhancement.
