Online Learning needs to be directed towards class objectives and the best start for student is to have a defined direction to reaching the goals required by the Instructor for Class participation and completing classroom assignments. This is best done with a well organized introduction and chronological syllabus to realistically meet classroom schedules. By being consistent with following course guidelines weather your classroom is synchronous or asynchronous helps facilitate the students to success of the subject and to meet classroom objective proficiencies. Subject matter needs to follow a Learning Management System that fits the style of the Learner and assist the teacher to easily get through to students. For me it is the open dialogue always found in discussion questions.

Communication is key and it needs to begin on day one. Students needs to understand what they are working toward in the class. I never take for granted that the class understands what a particular assignment requires, even if it is written in black and white. There are always those students who need further clarification. Communicating course objectives, outcomes, and specific task requirements is essential. Content delivery is also important. It needs to be done in such a way that students can appreciate how this information relates to their real world experience.
Delivery is both the layout of the course and what you do. In terms of the course, the way in which I present information is important because I have to be sure that I am able to reach all individuals during the approach. As well, the course layout should be delivered in a manner that is easily accessible and user friendly. Individuals should not find it difficult to locate information and resources.

First thing to consider would be to select the best teaching tools that will meet the needs of the instructor and the students to make sure they will have the best learning environment. I would research best practices from other sources that are very successful in their pattern of teaching.
The second item would be to be very organized in the presentation of the module and be precise with directions. This way the student will know what to expect and they will fully understand what they are supposed to achieve and what the goal of the module is.

For me they are regular communication/feedback and clear expectations for student performance. If students feel engaged, and know what is expected of them, they will be more comfortable and better achieve.
