Coaching is ongoing, and must have buy-in from both the coach and coachee. I can be a great help to the coachee if they strive to progress through the organization.

Michael,
I completely agree. I especially like your last statement. Unfortunately it seems that often people divide into two camps rather than seeing the need for both sets of skills.
Ryan

Coaching is guiding the employee to achieve the desired action/outcome. Managing is using the employee as a resource to accomplish the needs of the company. When combined successfully, the potential positive results are great.

Angela,
You are completely right. I do know that those in the coaching community are making greater efforts to demonstrate quantifiable results & a true ROI from coaching within the business sector.
Ryan

Completely agree. That is why I personally believe the best mix is a manager/leader rather than just one or the other.
Ryan

Angela,
Great comment. Interestingly the Hay Group (out of Boston) conducted extensive research based on Emotional Intelligence. What they found is that a coaching style of leadership is one of the most effective over the long-term. You're right on track!
Ryan

I completely agree. How do you act as a mentor within your role as a manager?
Ryan

sometimes it is challenging when thinking about how to measure the results in documentable form or in quantitative ways.

sometimes they need more directing and other times more coaching; it is a fine balance sometimes between the two

I work with those I supervise in a coaching manner more than anything. I think it allows for team work and gets things done for overall improvement of our what we are doing as a whole.

certainly can be a mentor; personal friendship is the only thing separate.

David,
Thank you for your comments. I agree with your distinction between managing & coaching & agree that each has its respective place & purpose.
Ryan

Managing an employee is about planning, directing, and holding an employee accountable for his or her job function. This is a necessary function for all managers. Coaching an employee is more about addressing opportunities for improvement, and coaching may not be appropriate in every situation.

Richard,
I love the analogy between playing chess & gardening. I think you are absolutely right, managing is very similar to chess with being able to direct movement. And I love the analogy to gardening for coaching. I may have to use that, with due credit of course!
Ryan

Coaching is a lot like teaching a student with no set lesson material. You have to support and faciltate once you are both clear on the path that provides the greatest benifit. Never forget there is always more than one "right answer" and it may be different depending on the person being coached and or doing the coaching.

Managing may be as simple as maintenance on what you have grown, to changing the position of the players to maximize their strengths and effictiveness.

Managing is more of a chess game and deciding what outcome you are willing to settle for.

Coaching is more of a gardening process where you grow your chess players to the positions that they are best suited for.

I completely agree with your thoughts, especially noting the difference between managing & coaching. Both are very important skill sets & are needed but they are distinct & unique.

Ryan

Coaching an employee involves guidance, direction, leadership, and assistance developing professionally.

Managing an employee is adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the company. When policies aren't followed, proper action is required.

There is a huge difference between the two and both involve unique characteristics to be effective.

Coaching is an ongoing, two-way process in which a manager and direct report share knowledge and experience to maximize the direct report's potential and help him or her achieve agreed-upon goals.
Managing is getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives

Good observation. I think you make a great point with the comment that coaching is helping a person achieve a better outcome than they are currently getting. I think an important part of this is helping them to discover their own best path.
Ryan

I would like to think we all need some coaching from time to time. Managers and projects are always changing.
Coaching is seeing if you can help a person facilitate a better outcome than they are gettin right now.

Being Directis necessary only if they arenot willing to be coached or are violating some policy that needs to be corrected right away.
