Toni Ann,
Training should be mandatory and on a regular basis. It shows the institution takes compliance very seriously.
Patty Aronoff
As a new employee at our institution, we offer a mandatory training that covers our institution and its governing regulations. The training last several weeks, and in addition to the required training there are several resources and voluntary on going workshops available to the employee. Employees should also take advantage of the annual consumer information guide, academic reports, and academic catalogs which are all available on our intranet.
It is extremely important to have a complete understanding of the school catalog. It is the controlling document for the entire school!
Not only are these trainings important but detrimental to being able to be proficient in your institution. Being up to date with guidelines and policies is crucial to the institution and having the knowledge will make you strive.
We have a smaller school so we find that it is not only fun but hands on to role play when we have new employees come in. They also get a resource binder with all the Rules/Regulations Do's and DOn'ts that they are tested on.
urania,
Practicing scenarios and role-playing is an essential part of admissions training.
Patty Aronoff
At our institute we have a extensive training class. All new comers will recieve a Resource Binder and will need to come to all weekly meetings. They will sit in with each department to understand how things are ran just so they are on the same page. They also will sit in and be asked to enroll a pretend student or talk to a pretend prior graduate or a soon to be graduate.
DAHLIA,
Excellent! We can only get better through various resources to increase our knowledge and our ability to apply the rules.
Patty Aronoff
The available resources are brochures, catalogs, faculty handbook, student handbook, tours, interaction with clinical site directors, CIE website and updates, CEUs and training programs such as MaxKnowledge and the statutes and rules. Interaction with other faculty members and previous members as well are all available as needed.
Ronald,
There are many resources available to us to keep us informed and knowledgeable. It is important to make sure that the websites are valid and providing current information.
Patty Aronoff
Aside of the specific training provided by the school about procedure, compliance and policies, there are plenty of other sites to keep up to date with compliance or changes such as Dept of Education or Florida Commission website
Christy,
Websites are awesome communication tools. Make sure they are easy to maneuver.
Patty Aronoff
Our main resource is our school website. Our school website is VERY complete and does address various questions pertaining to our curriculum, requirements, and overall institution. Our website also serves as a student, faculty, and staff portal and therefore holds a wealth of information. Very useful resource!
Michelle,
The catalog is the best place to start. It has all your policies and procedures in one place.
Patty Aronoff
We have a large amount of resources offered to us. Starting with the School Catalog, all the way to open door policy with our Compliance director. No room for error here.
Laura,
You do have to tread carefully. Recognizing the power of the social media and the force that comes with it needs to be well thought out.
Patty Aronoff
We just had a meeting yesterday to discuss how to integrate the student services office with Facebook. Some members of our organization were concerned of students created their own versions Facebook for their classes. Since it was private staff and faculty would not have access to it and concerns of students receiving correct and up to date information came about. We have since come up with a solution but one must tread very softly with social media.
Francis,
They all keep us connected! So many resources are available today!
Patty Aronoff
There are many associations and publications locally and nationally that provide resources as it relates current issues in higher education. The US Dept. of Education, The Florida Commission website and admissions association have been resources that I use to keep current with issues in higher education.
I find that social media is very helpful in providing useful information as well. LinkedIn, allows members to join groups that relate to your career field. Many of the groups I join are related to higher education. The blogs, and articles are great material.
Emily,
We owe it to ourselves and our students to be the best we can be.
