That's a great point Ramiro. It sounds like you use all three methods in order to make sure you are connecting with the student because people like to communicate in different ways.
Dr. Jean Norris
Thanks for sharing this Eva. Writing skills are important in any job and it sounds like you have great awareness here. Tell me, what is your plan to improve your writing skills?
Dr. Jean Norris
I think it depends in which situation you are at. you just have to put into practice the best way to communicate in the three different ways to maximize your communication capacity, no matter which if you are talking by phone, email or face to face.
I really need to improve my skills in writing, I have really short words but I have no problem with face to face or telephone.
Clay, I wonder, what specifically about voice tone is so important?
Dr. Jean Norris
Diane, thanks for sharing this piece. I'm curious do you work on your own body language or reading others'?
Dr. Jean Norris
I agree that voice tone is a prominent part of verbal communication.
I really do find that body language is the most essential part. I work on that every day
Lisa, practice makes perfect. Thanks for sharing your plan and let us know how it's working for you.
Dr. Jean Norris
I think I should plan out exactly what I want to say and maybe take some notes on topics of discussion so I don't lose my place. And if it's a meeting that I have time to prepare for, I think practicing my presentation would be helpful in my delivery. Similar to how an actor practices their lines.
Lisa, that is great insight. Now that you are aware of this, what is your plan to improve your spoken communication?
Dr. Jean Norris
I will be working on my spoken communication both face to face and on the telephone. I am very confident with my writing communication skills, but I often trip over my words or draw a blank when I'm concentrating too hard on what I'm "supposed" to be communicating. I think I focus so much on "doing it right the first time" that I end up becoming overwhelmed and it no longer flows as normal communication should.
Great awareness Kathy. The use of open-ended questions can certainly help you gauge where a person is on the phone. I wonder, can you provide some examples of the questions you are going to use?
Dr. Jean Norris
I will improve on my telephone communication. I am much better in a face to face situation because it is easier to read someone. I will ask more open-ended questions to gain insight.
Antonio, thanks for sharing your perspective here. It sounds like you want to ensure good communication and that the recipient receives the message that you intended. You also discussed different communication methods which shows me your willingness to adapt your communication to meet the needs of your audience. Great job.
Dr. Jean Norris
Eileen, that is a great point. It must be interesting to have to convey all of the information in two languages but it sounds like you work hard to make sure that the other person receives the message as you intended.
Dr. Jean Norris
I will always consider myself that the most effective ways to give a good level of communication is when you see yourself happy interacting with people that thanks your speech, your answers, your e-mails. So I use mostly face to face communication. When using the phone, I try to hear myself if that is what I would like to hear from others. And when sending e-mails, try to write what they need plus suggestions..
Same here. I have to convey in English and Spanish. I will be working to develop my written communication because it is the most difficult for me. You have to be careful with the words you select, make sure that your sentences are clear and that the reader are getting affective information.
Sadiya, that is great awareness. It can be difficult to gauge how someone reads written communication, but it sounds like you have a plan to make sure that the reader understands the message you are trying to communicate. Great job.
Dr. Jean Norris
I think the method I can work on and develop is written communication. Although I feel I do fine, sometimes, the tone of my writing can be blunt and to the point, without first exchanging pleasantries. Perhaps softening my tone will prove helpful.
