I think I need to work on my written communication skills. I feel I can better my skills when it comes to composing messages.
Excellent awareness, Andrew. It sounds like you are working to ensure your success in communicating with your prospective students and their families in a way that makes sense for all parties. Maintaining your students as the focus and working to understand their needs and goals are two components that will contribute greatly to your success in the future. To your continued success!
In the type of admissions work that I will be shortly resuming in my career, we will be utilizing in class presentations as a method of assessing the initial interest of a prospective student. As I have not engaged in this for a few years, I am probably a little rusty in this area. Therefore, I will be careful to display good posture and upbeat, but not "over the top" mannerisms during my presentation. I will also work extra hard to develop command over the concepts that I am going to deliver to the students, without giving a "canned" sounding presentation. I think that, in this venture, there will be more time to actually engage in question and answer opportunities with the students in class, so I am looking forward to being able to have that kind of interaction.
In our recruitment efforts, we will utilize all of the components of communication during the course of our contact with the prospective student and their family. The primary emphasis will be placed upon presentation skills, contact on the phone during the initial screening and appointment setting process, and on the person to person component when visiting with the student and their family in the home. Therefore, the information in this section has been well received and I'm sure will be useful to me.
I can see that you value being prepared when communicating, Andrew. You mention having a list by the phone to improve your communication. What will you include on this list that you believe will benefit your communications on the phone?
I will work on my telephone skills. Having a list by the phone will certainly inprove communication on delivering the message.
My telephone communications are not strong. It is difficult to me when I don’t percieve enthusiasm in the receiver’s tone. I feel lost and unmotivated. It is almost like driving blind.
Great observations, David. You're right, face to face interactions allow you to observe so much more than written ones, which can help you to communicate more effectively. It sounds like you want to work on your written communication to ensure you're delivering your message clearly. I like the fact that you try to keep your email communications conversational in order to build rapport - that's a great practice. What else might you do to further develop your written communications?
I really do not like emails especially when the other person is close by. I have a tendency to formulate my emails as if I am in a face to face conversation which may include some humor, instead of keeping with a "to the point" message that most of my collegues subscribe to. I prefer face to face communication because I am able to ascertain a level of understanding and develop a certain bond with the individual that can not be achieved in other forms of communication.
Improving your written communication skills is a great place to start, Amanda. When it comes to adding content to your emails, it's always good to run your ideas by your supervisor to make sure you are compliant. What type of content would you like to add to your emails moving forward?
I would like to work on my written communication to add better content to my emails.
In telephone communicacion i agrre that voice tone is the most important.
It sounds like you have a great deal of interactions on the phone and face to face. What specifically will you do communication-wise to improve your face to face and telephone conversations?
Face to face and telephone is my method of communications due to i bring a lot of customers
Awesome, Sismai. It's true, listnening is a critical skill when you're building relationships, personally and professionally. I bet that you'll find that as your listening skills improve, your relationships will be stronger as well.
I think I will work on my listening because i think that is one if not the most important communication skills. It will also help me develope better relationships with co workers and friends.
Excellent awareness, Erica. Having a clear idea of what it is that you want to improve moving forward will certainly help you to formulate a plan. It can be helpful to remember key concepts and phrases shared to ensure you're on the right track with your student, too. All the best as you work to improving your written communications.
I must work on written communication. My goal is to make sure I clarify requests and start with a quote from a previous conversation. This will allow the receiver to know exactly what is intended through my commnication.
My face-to face communication
I really dont have an idea. What would you suggest?
Thanks for sharing, Magregory. It sounds like you like the idea of getting to know the student in order to personalize your framework for the student to demonstrate that you truly want to help. What might you do to learn more about the student in order to personalize your calls?
