Academic Stagnation Stress

Is it all worth it? I tell my students yes it is if you put fourth the time and effort. Every school teachs different subjects, I tell them if you dedicate the time the outcome will be a rewarding one.

Great word, it needs to followed by "reinforcement". We see the value in our programs, the students saw value when the signed up... we all need to keep them aware of that value.

I think that every student deals with this issue. Today’s youth is used to everything being handed to them without them putting forth an effort to EARN it. By keeping a positive learning environment and remaining the students that dedication and completion will pay off, it helps them set goals and reach them.

I hope they shared their experience with your current students. Faculty get to be like parents - they just don't know anything, but when the message is reinforced by people from the peer group it takes a whole new meaning.

I have been lucky to have some come back after a time in their field. Curiously they have told me that what they perceived as not important, became very important. While in class they believed that what I had to pass along as "real life" info was "just not true" based on their perception. When in fact what I passed along was in fact what they were going to experience. It was nice to know the world hasn't changed all that much.

Do you ever have graduates come into your class to answer this question?

Value is exactly correct. Sometimes we need to remind our students of the value of what they are doing here using real life situations, personal anecdotes etc.. The older we get, the harder it is for us to remember how time drags when you are young and doing something you have to do instead of something you want to do. The difference is that many of these kids were raised without any shame for quitting anything and to keep them in school, we need to tell them and SHOW them the value of what they are doing.

One simple word. VALUE If the student sees value in what he/she is learning they will be more eager to learn.

I have introduced the concept of "getting a maximum return on your investment" and repeat it several time durring the course to a point that they start to believe in it. After a short time the students durring the course would repeat it back. Also, making time to just sit down and discuss options, our goals and take the time to realign our learners with the reasons why we are attending class. At these discussions time to make youself available to the learners.

yes steve i think that is correct i tell my students have you ever heard any one say they have learned to much
