We have most of the info that we need given to us in our electronic grade book.
Hello,
Basically, it is a team effort, one that needs to be organized in such a way that it brings optimum results.
Hello,
On the first day of class I use an assessment that asks for the students' goals, expectations, accomplishments, learning experiences, etc.
Hello,
We receive our class rosters before the course begins, so I like to send a welcome message to my students and provide information such as time and location of the class and help desk.
Carmen, we also encourage admissions to inform us if students admit they have some type of disability. With this information, we can better serve the student once they began class.
Admissions collects information with regards to age, job status, marital status, children, particular program, educational history, barriers to success, and career goals.
Most of our students are open about issues that affect them when questioned by an instructor. If they don't offer up information or the question from the instructor is not directly related to the material it probably is not appropriate for an instructor to deal with the issue. We have a very proactive student services group that deals with those underlying issues and the suprvisory staff is very visable to the students. The result at our school is every student has options for going to staff for help that they feel confortable with.
Phil--
I think it is great that you are following up right away with the students. This sends a great message that you noticed they were not there and that you care. Once they know that, they are more likely to better communicate when things come up.
Susan
We (the instructors) have started to get student information at the beginning of each class and try to call students that don’t show up for the day. We check to make sure that they are ok and let them know what they missed in the class and what we will be doing the following day. In a short period of time, some students have started to tell us in advance that they are not going to be in class the following day, next Tuesday, or they might be late… Sometimes they will call or text a classmate and have the classmate let us know what has happened. It is nice to see that they have become proactive.
Information that faculty could use to help the student be more familiar in class would be such things as Learning disabilities, friendships and possible future goals.
I like the Admissions to collect any and all informations, without infringing on their privacy, such as how far they commute daily, car pooling, family support and financial support. All these conditions may have some effect on their education.
As an Instructor, on the first day of class we hand out 3 x 5 cards to get phone numbers and e-mail addresses so we can contact the student if they dont show up for class.
I think the most important information to collect and share with the faculty is why they are choosing to enter into the Culinary field and what do they hope to do after graduating. Faculty can really support student career goals finding common links between the student's aspirations and instructor's past experience.
Admissions collects background information on prospects through a preliminary questionnaire the prospect completes before meeting with the admissions representative, the lead sheet from the phone interview, and the questionnaire used during the interview process.

I echo this recognition. A marvel idea. The "Heaven Forbid" statement/paper let's the student know up front that he or she may face challenges and the let us know how they'd like to be helped or saved up front.
Oh my gosh, this is an excellent idea! This will help to quell doubt and nervousness in the prospective student. I believe that it will also help to provide a better/stronger cohort of students who have a common goal to succeed in their newly chosen field of study.
I believe that we know prior to orientation each student's motivation for why they have chosen their new career path. That information should be shared with the faculty and staff so that we can better prepare for supporting and motivating that student.
Do to FERPA regs we don't share very much. We do share with the faculty the list of students who are starting along with phone, email, and program they are enrolling in. At the faculty meeting the faculty ask students to share with them, and the other new students various pieces of information about their lives.
