Our placement department gives presentations to all of the students in each cycle of their schooling, to make sure the students are on track in securing their externships. The placement dept. also assists our students in looking for employment while they're in school, since the class scheduling can create conflict with standard work schedules. Since the students are already exposed to ongoing externship presentations throughout their schooling, making the existing presentations more effective (engaging/interactive) might help to increase our student retention.

Ashley,

Bringing Career Services in earlier is important. Students should start thinking about their career when they start their program.

Dr. Ron Hansen

Our Career Services department actually does not really reach students until they are in their final term. I think this is a problem that could easily be remedied by Career Services contact info and maybe a message to students added to the weekly newsletter. It could also be effective if they acted as a guest speaker periodically throughout the program to touch base and keep students informed about what they have to look forward to.

Kim,

A simple technique is to use networking, resume writing or interviewing as part of course content review activities.

Dr. Ron Hansen

Our school has a career department that reaches out to students to assist them in many ways. The most popular ways students are helped is by educating them on the importance of networking, volunteering, gaining work experience, resume writing and interviewing skills.

I think we could improve our course work to implement these learned skills into the curriculum instead of solely relying on the career services department.

We need to start making student aware of the type they will have preform from the very first day and to make the hands on labs closer to the type of jobs they would have to preform on the job.

Chan,

Hopefully, the CS department sets the correct expectations regarding the current job market and what students could be doing to be as prepared as possible when the time comes to search for a job. Sometimes, I think students think there is a job waiting for them they MINUTE they graduate. Even in a robust economy that may be an overly ambitious expectation.

Dr. Ron Hansen

Our CS people come to classroom every 6 weeks. They do good job with students. It would be better if there were more jobs, but the economy bad right now.

Our career services department meets the students at orientation. They come to each class every 6 weeks, and talk about various topics. They have job fairs, and email all the instructors when new opportunities are posted so we can let our students know. The career services office is also centrally located and very hard to miss.

While our career services department comes in early and relatively often there might be opportunities to tie the course objectives into their resume as students complete each course.

Our Employment Department just installed touchscreen TV's outside the department so Students can stop and touch the map on the screen to locate current jobs in they area they want to work in. The department still has hands on with the Student of course but this option can make the job market even more available to the Student.

They work on placing students for employment in their chosen field.

Industry awareness is a must. We involve local employers in many of our activities job fairs open houses and special events.

Career Services is involved with the students from orientation to graduation. During the first few classes cs Reps come into the classes & advise what services are available. They have training sesions of how to write resumes, & mock job interviews. They also arrange for events in which students can volunteer to work, show off their skills & network with future employers

Our Director of Student Placement reaches out to the students, employers...she does a great job at helping students get placed.

Comming to fisrt class introduction, third class, resumes, fifth class interview skills and being acessable for the students during school hours 7am-7pm M-F

Our career guidance coach completes labor market studies for potential students so that the student can make an informed decision on the program of choice. She will assist the student with resume building, mock interviews and the importance of professionalism on social networking sites. Thirty days prior to graduation a job search is completed for the potential graduate.

melissa,

Perfect. What if the career specialist contacted students right from the start of their program... not just during the externship.

Dr. Larry Banks

dan,

Sometimes, just getting a job to get a start is good, too.

Dr. Larry Banks

Each student has a career development specialist who stays in touch with the student throughout externship and afterward with job opportunities and setting up interviews.

Making sure to keep in touch with students that have completed externship so they dont fall through the cracks
