How Can Universities Increase Student Retention?

Higher Education professionals were asked, what can universities do to increase student retention.  See what they said and see what a student said.  What do you say?

Model for successful classroom management

Students live what they learn.  And so I believe that a teacher's physical appearance and organizational skills will set the pace for successful students and student behavior.

self reflection on the course

The overall experience with this course was very enlightening and informational.  I will definitely implement these strategies and skills to further empower my students and develop as an instructor.

Summative Vs Formative

Seeing this distinction helped in my thinking about how to support my students moving forward.

It was a nice refresher for us to truly see what we can gather from how the new classroom dynamic is and how we can engage it as a facilitator and provide the best service possible, by means of the best learning experience overall. I did see some good terms that I usually do not use. I know now how to incorporate better these terms moving forward and also as a way to continuously improve my presence as an active learner myself and also as an engaged instructor.

This course as a whole

I find these types of Continuing Education courses to be time consuming and not really useful.  If you are a new instructor who has never taught a class before it might be helpful.  However i didn't learn anything doing this.

lAB

The course was very helpful.

Media

I found this to be a very useful and educating tool that I will definately use in my class.

Great class!

ED102

Thanks for a great, fun course. I learned a lot!

On CEE's ED101

This initial course has been great!

Many of the things featured are really useful. I particularly appreciated the short Harvard videos. They are compelling and you can tell that the instructors there have a lot of experience.

I enjoyed being taught the following things:

1. It is important to be early as it has a deep psychological effect on students. If you get there early, learning can begin much more easily.

2. It is important to ask the students not what they learned by reading the book the night before, but to engage them on what occurs… >>>

What I have been doing has a name

I teach Makeup for film and I have incoporated several of these practices over the years  without knowing the specific names for each entity.  This was an interesting class to take.  i like my students to participate in class.  I encourage them to ask  questions,  I probe quite a bit as well as lead them on.  I also like boost their confidenace when they do a good makeup application by telling them how well they have done.  I also question them to see if they can verbalize what they have done.

Stressors

I enjoyed reading the many examples that were shared in the course, as this helped me a great deal.  Thank You!!

I found this to be a excellent course for what I am teaching.

Soft Skills

This subject has really opened my eye to the effectiveness of soft skills on the enhancement of student learning.  I have used alot of hard skills in the classroom and now I will be adding more soft skill to better communicate a caring environment for the students.  I probably will take this course again in the future to keep me mindful of the needs for soft skill in the learning arena.

Follow-up with students assignments

I have learn when you follow-up with your students correcting or giving feedback on assignments, they are excited

to hear your comments. In addition i always tell them" Why" they need to change an answer. I allow them to research

a correction.

Interesting topic

Course was inrteesting however if our copy machine worked properly in our faculity room I would like to have printed some material out

Good course but I am all blogged out

I enjoyed this course, but I am short on words. I guess I am all blogged out. I just completed a post-graduate course in Computers and Composition and blogging was a part of the course requirement. I had to complete 15 entries for my blog and I created a new blog for my 27 page research project, so I would now like to take a rest. Don't bother to comment to my blog because I am not going to respond.

Students as Customers

Great course, ED 209.

I see a lot of adult learners come through our school, and they are the self-directed learners. From these, I can always count on timely assignments, serious class input, and finished projects.

They are sometimes mentors to the younger aged students who are still trying to find their way through college life.

The text on passive and active listening was important for me, to focus on my own ability to hear my students. Am I really listening? Or am I waiting to give them my opinion. The topic covering verbal and non-verbal communication was enlightening. This… >>>
