Why active learning is important

ED111 is a good course to take for all instructors. I have been an instructor for about 5 years and have learned a thing about creating an active learning environment. For my first year I did the traditional lecture format and would constantly hear little sighs and yawns regulalrly. I really wanted to engage the students but was finding it dfficult. One day I decided to allow the students to particiapte a lot more and became willing to hand a lot of the control of the learning to the students. I still lecture but I  also allow the students a… >>>

Questioning

As instructors we know questioning is very important tool in asessment of student also keeps them motivated engaged and helps in critical thinking. This lesson was very helpful in guiding and sharing about type of questioning ,Also it encouraged me to keep using probing and redirection and reinforcement with my students as I see the importance of those.I enjoyed this course.

New to Teaching

I found this course to be very helpful and informative. As a new instructor this course showed me different aspects on what to expect as an instructor and what my students can expect from me. I really enjoyed the different learning styles. It shows that everyone learns differently and by teaching in a variety of ways I can accommodate my students appropriatly.

Can walking promote creativity? Look at Charles Dickens

Can walking (and/or exercise) help students learn?  See this article

Charles Dickens walked everywhere in London. Walked 30 miles to his country home and then back. BTW, excellent recent movie about Charles Dickens and his mystery life called The Invisible Woman

Improving Instrutor skills and student learning success

This course helped me a great deal on how to conduct myself as a new instructor. It tought me how to deal with students that have had behaviour issues in my classroom,Also how to improve student learning outcome and success of the students. I highly recomend this course.

Adult Learner's dilemma

It is true that the adult learner brings to class a wealth of experiences and ethics that sets an example for the young learners but the adult learner also has the most personal responsibility and commitment to family, employer, and in some cases, his own business. When situations arise that he needs to address these responsibilities, school becomes second priority; success in school may be threatened by absences, lack of time to finish assignments on due date, missed lessons, and other factors. In some cases, despite support and accomodations employed by the teacher, the adult learner gets overwhelmed and discouraged.… >>>

ED113

I have found that everything discussed in this course is spot on! Very well organized and the subject matter is comprehensive yet simple and completely relevent. I recomend this course to everyone.

Enhancing Student Professional Skills

This course was relevent and very helpful in pinpointing problem areas for teaching and for students.  I found it to be very helpful with tweeking and adjusting my talking points in class.

Greetings

This course had great simplicity, and a detailed outline of what to look forward to in the future classes. I would recommend this course for other beginning instuctors.

ED103

I recently finished ED103 and was really pleased and surprised. I learned more than I thought I would. I also found myself taking lots of notes along the way.

Dealing with the angry student

ED104

Awsome course. It speaks directly so some issues I face an angry student I currently teach. Whenever my student walks in the classron the atmosphere suddenly becomes charged with hostility. I realized I was employing some of the very same stragtegies I read about in the course. So I was encouraged. I do not view an angry student as the enemy; I see them as sand paper -- a kind of refining tool to refine my soft skills. Many times they are not angry with us, they are angry with the issues in their lives that make them feel… >>>

Ethical Dilema - a Soft Skill

As an Instructor in the Massage Therapy Program we are very focused on teaching ethics within our profession. It is very important in this field to admit you are human and vulnerable to unethical behavior.  None of us THINK we will make an unethical choice, but the reality is that many of us will find ourselves with an ethical dilema at some point in our carreers.  The main culprits of unethical behavior are:

  • Money
  • Power
  • Sex

Some other factors which spur from the three listed above are:

  • the need to feel loved
  • lack of assertiveness
  • the need to be right

Generation "Like"

For those instructors wanting to understand a little more about our upcoming students, this a a nice PBS Frontline program called "Generation Like". Interesting to say the least.  The program talks about marketing and advertising but could easily be talking about higher education.

Awesome ED 111

I was learning about the differents ways to educate students with differnts methods and activities

Awesome learning!

Our students are not the only ones that need to learn. Teachers do too! I got a lot of good informaion from EL106. I am ready to start applying some of these ideas to my classes.

Good communication yields good performance

I am believeing more and more that the better we communicate with students the better their performance in online environments are. I think this class did a nice job presenting information to help me and others achieve this.

Time and Stress Management for Instructors

This was a great class with lost of important information for some who does not know how to handle stress and management time.  However, I do think that I am well versed in both areas because of my teaching experience and the number of years that I have been in the public school environment, prior to making the transition to the adult career college environment.

I am a person who enjoy working out at the gym; as well as walking or moderately jogging inside or out; therefore, I was very aware of how much these activitiy energize me, as well… >>>
