Learning disabilities

It is important to attempt to show how a student can use their disability as an anchor to learning. If they realize that they are not alone that ever individual faces a learning disability to a degree, they will face their own with success. Yes there is an understanding that their disability is real and may even have a well establish label. To get a student to face who they are and to understand to accept it so they can grow.

Alternating Reading and Writing

It is important to stress to students that being able to read and write is essential in todays computer based world. I always give reading assignments with a paper that must be graded, in order to give the student practice in these skills.

monitoring students

You can certainly determine who in the class room is getting along with each other and who is not. This allows the instructor to use different clicks within the class room to inhance teaching.

using the whole class room

I often am unable to move around the whold classroom, but certainly try to. Sometimes you find your selve behind the class and this requires the students to shift to view you. It does let me know who is interested in the material or the lecture in a given moment which I use to plan future improvements.

Delivering Content

The key to delivering content effectively is to first familiarize yourself with the material to be covered, practice before hand any demonstrations to be done and vary the way the material is delivered. By doing this we can address several different learning preferences on the part of the students, maximize their attention span, and keep them engaged.

Meeting Class For First Time

First impressions are very important, that is why as instructors we must do everything possible to present ourselves in a positive light from the get go. I like to tell the students about myself and have them share a little something about themselves. By doing this and getting a bit more familiar, everyone benefits by feeling more comfortable in the learning environment.

Planning and preparation

Taking the time to organize and prepare the material to be covered simplifies the process for the instructor and guarantees a better result on the part of the students.

Instructional Style

An instructor's professional style takes time to fully develop. While we might inherently have a particular style as individuals, this should be honed with experience, adopting things that are effective and leaving behind the ones that aren't.

Active Lectures

I use powerpoints but I leave them "naked". I just give them a frame, and while I'm lecturing they have to "put clothes on it"!

Organization and Planning

Organization and planning really makes your class flow a lot smoother. Your students really respect the time you put into organizing your class.

The 3 M's

I am a fairly new instructor, and when I read the section on the 3 M's it opened my eyes a little bit. Thinking about it, it is common sense, but you never really think about how closely you are being scrutinized by your students.

What makes an instructor effective?

There are two critically important components of an effective instructor: having knowledge of the subject being taught, and knowledge and skill in how to teach that subject.

Teaching Styles

Instructors should realize that no teaching style is wrong IF the students are learning. We need to use formative assessments to show that our teaching is being effective.

Classroom forum

I find that the use of posters related to the subject of our classes, develope interest in the topics we teach. Some of these posters are projects from the students in past class groups. They must pick the project based on guidelines given by the instructor, and there is a time limit. I find that current student ask additional questions based on these posters. The posters are displayed on the classroom walls and knew posters are added.

Real life examples in lab

As a clinical coordinator I too find it useful to experiment with real life examples in lab settings. It helps the students relate to people and learn valuable skills needed in the workplace.

Reinforcement/praise

when students have a positive experience in the class room it encourages more participation. If they are not made to feel stupid, maybe moving in the right direction with a skill or concept they will become more productive. It is important however not to make them feel like there is no room for improvement.

safety in Hydralics

I teach a class on Hydraulics, one of the most dangerous fields to be in. I find that going over the safety requirements every day before we go to class is crucial for a safer lab experience. I have a zero tolerance when it comes to safety just as it is in the work place. They must understand the importance of safety. For example, if not wearing safety glasses that student is literally fired for the day, sent home to thing about the danger he put themselves in. You must teach it but you must also enforce it

mini lectures

With the data showing how long we are able to keep our students undivided attention I find that using a mini lecture formatkeeps them focused longer. By stopping every 10 to 12 minutes it allows me to do a demonstration of material I have just lectured about. This keeps it fresh in the students mind and they sem to retain the lecture material better with the short demonstrations and keeps them focused longer

Motivating students

Motivating students is something we all do in some form or fashion. One of the best motivators we as Instructors can do is to simply show recognition and appreciation for the students hard work. Being recognized for working hard and given a pat on the back will motivate students and makes them feel like their hard work does not go unnoticed. Sometimes a simple Thank You can work wonders in a students demeanor...

Praising your students.

I praise many of my studens for doing a good job when their tasks are completed. They feel more confident when their mentor recognizes their accomlishments. The student then feels good.I think that not enough instructors pass on good or great news.
