Sometimes, the outcome of academic success has been met with mediocrity. The article posits "Do institutions need to provide results or opportunity?"

We all want to be fair in allowing opportunities for learning, but should we give all students the same opportunity to revise their work based on the decision to help a few?  It is usually a small percentage who fall into this category of needing this type of help.  Is it fair to those students who worked hard to get their grade only for the instructor to be seen as showing favoritism for a select few to make up work?

The Teaching Professor is a  blog that features a weekly post on academic topics aimed at providing new information on academic discussion such as: the scholarship of teaching and learning, student engagement, classroom policies, active learning, assignment strategies, grading and feedback, and student performance.

It is important to keep students engaged in the classroom. Criminal Justice students enjoy hearing of my personal experiences during my career.  Student tend to relate to the course topic of discussion while assimilating their thoughts about their goals.  Explicit expectations are outlined at the beginning of the course and with emphasis on classroom etiquette.  Students will usually reflect upon their personal experiences with others who were non-compliant and acknowledge the expected culture of the classroom environment.

This is a good idea in reducing the number of students who accidently fall asleep in class because they are engulfed in busy lifestyle outside of the classroom.  Lecturing for 15 to 20 minutes followed by a group activity aimed at course objectives have worked well for my classes.

Discussion Comment

@CSMColumbus,  I agree with you 100%. It is so easy to build a professional relationship with students and then forget to follow compliance measures when discussing academic issues with the student.  This is especially crucial when communicating telephonically with any student.  We should take a couple of extra steps and properly identify the student before discussion of grades and preformance.
