A student is more likly to stay if they are challenged and shown that by taking this course they will benefit in the long run for it. If they ask, "what will I get from this course" and the ansewer is something that makes sense they will stay.
You must not let the students think they are in charge for even a second. It's easier to start off tough and ease up then go tjhe other way.
Most new instructors want to be liked. The problem with being easy at first it's impossible to get them to pay attention because you've lost them. You must show that you are in charge not them It's a lot easier to be strict at the beginning and loosen up if they deserve it later.
I usually have a lot of success showing the student they are the only ones being hurt by cheating. Being a technical school I try ot prove to them that they will not suceed in class and or life if they cheat. They usually come around when I show them how much money they stand to lose by not knowing the material when looking for a job. Many company's have an entrance exam and if they aren't prepared the only person they are hurting is themselves.
If all students were great to have in class everybody could do this. The skill of the instructor is when he or she can manage to turn a student. Whether it's an angry student, shy student or a cheating student you have to find a way to help them overcome the problem and show them they can do the work. I've found usually the student is trying to hide a feeling they may have. By showing you care usually you can relate the same type of problem you may of had that they can relate to.

If you treat your class like a job they can get a feel for how they have to work as a team in order to be efficient. Someone who is unprepared or can't get along will find they are going to have a difficult time doing some tasks. The moral at any job is very important. The better the moral the easier it is to want to come to work. If someone manages to ruin that feeling the moral drops and it's very hard to return it to an enjoyable workplace. With that you can have someone be the bad… >>>

Being a tech school the students must learn that time is money and being late is not tollerated in the work place. No boss is going to keep an employee long if he or she is always late to work or doesn't finish their work in a reasonable amount of time.
It is your job to find out how to motivate each and every student in your class. You may have to try a couple of different ways to get certain students active but if you don't try the rest will see that if they follow the inactive student they to can get away with paying attention.
This is a statement I hear alot. What you need to do is respond before the question is asked. Myself it has to do with my age and having led a very active life (13 operations to repair broken bones, etc.) and can no longer work at the pace I'm used to.

Do you find yourself asking this question? I do! There are many times I here management, supposed leaders, TTL's, EM's constantly grinding away about a problem. But they never seem to fix the problem, they just talk a good game. There is a saying here, "Work as ONE and get the job done". Everytime I see that I think of who's passing the buck now. So now comes the, If not me who. Should I become one of them and join he pack, never been much of a joiner? Who am I really hurting by that mentality? Not me! The… >>>
