Hi Elizabeth:
I think you have perfectly described both the rewards of teaching, and the frustration we all feel with that type of student who tends to drag their feet and not really do the amount of work they need to for their own success.

Hi Donald:
Unfortunately, our examinations often times carry the most weight in point value, which can cause students to cram for the exam without really taking the time to understand the material.

I use testing during the quarter to find gaps in the students's knowledge of the subject matter. The final exam is used to measure if the student is leaving the course with the core objective mastered.
Evaluating students is essential to insure safe practice of skills students perform with patients.
to assess the students abilities.
Some reasons for evaluating students are the following:
- evaluate student's understanding of the course
- evaluate instructor's efficiency in teaching
- evaluate the quality of learning
- get student's feedback to improve course delivery and content
Evaluations for a student is like a road map, it helps them get a clear picture of where they are and what to improve.
Hi Hank:
You're right, evalation and assessment can take on many forms. The goal here is to measure learning, or the degree to which it has occurred.
In some professions, grades are not as important as the skills that a student must demonstrate, due to the nature of the job they're doing. Having an "A" student who can't perform on the job is a serious concern.

Students like the feedback on how they are doing. The grade is the reward for thier efforts in your class. Most students like positive reinforcement and the grades usually serve to acknowledge thier participation in the class and a guide for how well they are learning the topic. Another use is to give the students feedback on how successfull they will be in their career field. If a student fairs a Chemistry class then Pharmacy may not be the right career choice for them.
I enjoy evaluating my students. I try to make it as positive as possible so the student understands their standing in the learning process. This is just one of reasons to evaluate students. It also provides me, the instructor, the opportunity to review what material I have covered. It allows me to make sure that I am providing the information in a way that students are learning and able to use the information.
Students should be evauluated otherwise the instructor does not know if they are understanding the material; instructors are made aware if they have to repeat the material and the students can learn material better.
To determine if the student is learning the material and check yourself as instructor.
It is important to assess students because it gives the instructor an idea of their knowledge and how they fare in the course, if you have any problem with the art or study time, also serves to further assess the activity of the instructor and see if this meeting its goal as a teacher.
Hi Juan:
With any style of testing, it might be a good idea to review the material and apply it to a real-life scenario (if you can).
Also, one of the advantages of evaluating and then reviewing a test with the group is that it might allow a student to gain a better understanding of the rationale they need to answer similar questions that will occur on future exams. Also, it might trigger new questions about the subject matter that will help to stimulate a better understanding of the concepts overall.

Hi Joseph:
By consistently allowing students to have an idea of how they are doing in class, they have the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible. By doing this, they promote a more successful outcome for themselves by the end of the course.
