Hi Brandy:
For me, the primary reason to evauate is to measure to what degree the student achieved the student learning objectives for the course.

Evaluating students is important it allows the instructor to access student progress along with students knowledge base.
Hi Karin:
I guess a simple and obivious reason is we want to measure to what degree a student has learned or acquired the requisite knowledge defined by the course objectives and student lesarning outcomes. Apllied to the work setting, if there are skill involved, we want to be sure tey can apply them adequately once employed.

I evaluate my students to ensure they comprehend the material i've taught to them in addition to the material they have understood from the textbook readings. To give the student feedback as to what they have learned or need to relearn. I also use the information to create new assessments and to determine culmination activities and reviews for finals.
Hi Sabrina:
Socrates would just ask questions (and I suppose would give his personal assessment of knowledge acquired).
We have to be objective for reasons pertaining to legal, accreditation, licensing, credentialing, employer expectations, and successful job worthiness. Somewhere in there is student learning so they will understand. But it can be murky due to all the external factors mordern education has to encounter and cater to.

It gives the students an accurate picture of where they are in their learning, it is highly motivational, and it helps me as an instructor evaluate my delivery strategies. Overall it helps the entire classroom look for ways to improve.
Hi Fonda:
True, we can help students improve.
I thing we evaluate to measure to what degree did the student learn the material, or the course objective, or student learning outcomes - in short how prepared will they be in the work setting.

Hi Bernard:
Best reason is to measure to what degree they learned what was expected.

To let them know how they are doing in class as well as letting them know what they can do to improve there grade.
I believe that evaluating students help identify their strengths and weak areas, which then give them the opportunity to work on a plan of improvement.
Oral quizzes and written tests as well as applications assignments are the only way to determine how a student has mastered the material.
Without various types of evaluations, an instructor has no clear idea of how and what a student is learning.
Various types of testing methods work differently for different students. I try to vary the testing methods so everyone has the opportunity to do well on some type of evaluation.
My biggest reasons for evaluating students are to check myself on my ability to teach a concept and to find out if the students understand the concept.
Evaluation can also help the student to set goals for themselves throughout the term. They are able to see where they are and where they need to be.
As an instructor, I am generally looking for what worked and what didn't in my teaching. I might need to change the presentation, add an activity or revisit the concept.
Hi Jennifer:
Every class has course objectives. Of course, these have to be met. Most of our students are preparing for jobs, so besides the objectives, any skills or specialized knowledge we know they'll need to be successfull needs to be assessed.
Elsewhere in this course, we talk about pretesting. That could be another reason evaluating students - to determine what they know before a class begins.
In the end, "are they ready for the work setting" has to addressed. Evaluations help assess to what degree this has occured.

What are some reasons for evaluating students?
We want to evaluate our students to make sure that they are understanding the information. We can also use the evaluates to make sure we got the information to our students. We want to evalute in different ways/forms as well.
Evaluation is one thing student always is eager to know. He/She gets motivated by knowing the fruits of his efforts. It also gives instructor a chance to reflect upon his own teaching style example how much a student has retained and is able to demonstrate the learning.
I agree that evaluation should be the same as if it was myself
Hi Maria:
All good reasons.
For me, I think the the only way to measure to what degree the student learned what was planned is through evaluation.

It is important that the student be evaluated at the end of the course to see if the student:
Understant the subject
Learn the material
if the sudent is capturing the message that the teacher is trying to teach.
if the student is comphending the material
they are reaching their goal in class
to let the teacher know if she can move on with the next subject.
Evaluation are important to know if any student need special help.
Hi Lenore:
Good ideas and experience.
Study guides are tricky, depending on the topic. If too specific, students will focus solely on the study guide information, and be bummed when they know everything listed but questions were asked that didn't appear on the study guide.
On the other hand, some topics are so broad, the teacher needs to narrow down the areas most important and most likely to be found on the test. Care has to be taken taht study guides are not thinly veiled versions of the test.
