Reasons for evaluating students would be to let the student know the answer to the question. Did I learn anything. Have I retained the information. Have I obtained the objectives stated at the beginning of the course. I also feel that there is another reason for evaluating students and that is to evaluate yourself. The instructor can use this as a guide to help determine if the material was challenging enough, if the assesment covered enough information, and if the instructor was correclty interacting with the students.

Evaluating students gives them feedback as to their progress and should be done as close to using an evaluation tool as possible and it should be done often- especially for those students who are not performing to level-I find that meeting with these students often helps them to focus and many times do better because they know you are interestes in their success.

Students have to be periodically evaluated so that we know whether or not they are on track or falling behind of the course objectives.

Hi Deborah:
For me, measuring how closely we met our course objectives is the main reason for evaluating our students. I think indirectly, our teaching effectiveness can be estimated, although I think there are many variables involved.

Some reasons for evaluating students are:
1. Serve as a check to see how well the students are learning the material.
2. Serve as a check on how well you are presentating the material.

Hi Yvonne:
Good reasons all. In some programs there may be an external standard that has to be met (licensure, credentialing, permits. etc), so that would be another reason to evaluate.

Many programs incorporate a lot of skill and procedural processes, and this would be another reason to evaluate.

To make sure they are understanding the course.

To see if I am teaching in a way that they understand the course.

It is feedback for both the student and teacher.

To evaluate what that they are learning.

Hi Mario:
For me, evaluation is about measuring the degree of learning that has occured over a period of time.

There are various ways to do this, but in all, we want to be fair, consistent, and above all, determine the degree of student learning.

Evaluation provides both the student and instructor with vital information. Where am I in the course? Am I providing adequate instruction. Does the student need further help during the course. These are all questions that are answered in the process of evaluation.

Hi David:
Hopefully, teachers consider the effectiveness of their assessments after each administration. Improvement can only occur through analysis.

Hi Jeremiah:
Evaluations should measure the degree of learning. Side benefits of critiquing curriculum, teaching style or effectiveness, or meeting course objectives can also occur.

Hi Kimberlee:
Good ideas. Measuring performance (or degree of learning that has occured) is the most basic definition I can think of.

IT LETS STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE INSTRUCTOR KNOW HOW WELL STUDENTS ARE DOING AND IF CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE IN THE GRADING ,THE TEST AND OVER ALL EVALUATIONS.

For me evaluating students allows me to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student affording me the opportunity to focus on areas that need improvment. In addition I consider each evaluation as a tool to gage the success of my teaching strategies with each calssrooms unique dynamic, allowing me to be flexible in my teaching style and dedicate more time on subjects that the students appear to be having difficulty with.

I want to know if they are understanding the material and able to apply it. I also think it is important for students to be aware of thier strong and weak areas so they can improve and keep building skills.

Hi Farrell:
A well informed student will do better. This includes being informed of their status. When there's room for improvement, what a perfect opportunity to give important advice,as well give some support and encouagement - recognition of good work and assistance any help they might neeed.

Regards, Barry

Evaluation of my students allows me to first see if my students or obtaining the information, secondly, myself, I'm I delivery the information the correct way. It's the students right to know how they are doing.

Hi Roberta:
Great. Good approach to informining students how they're doing and what areas may still need more attention.

Regards, Barry

Hi Clarence:
As teachers, we have a mission and a plan to achieve the objectives of the course. Periodic measurement of the degree to which students have learned is necessary if we want to define whether we've been successfulk (or not).

Regards, Barry

Evaluating students is definitely a progress report for both the student and the instructor. I give several smaller quizzes that build up to 2 major written tests and a final and the quizzes are almost like practice runs for the students and tell me if I am coming across well with the material
