understanding myself as a instructional leader gives me confidience to present the information at hand with diferent levels of understanding from students to adjust to there needs to be properly educated.
Hi Kerry:
Disinterest and lack of of entusiasm in a subject can be the death knell for student learning. As you state, many instructors are physically there but there heart and soul - their passion - has long since departed. Who would want to intentially be in that kind of environment? And, would it be fair to subject captivate students to this incipient apathy?
Regards, Barry
Hi Kerry:
Stronger instructors understand themselves - both strengths and weaker areas. Playing to their stregths is wonderful - if that information is known.
This starts with a willingness to want to learn, and change or adapt as may be the case. Unfortunately, not all are willing to do so.
Regards, Barry
I wholeheartedly agree Brian , but I'd even go a step further and say "True passion is what prevents a teacher from leaving before they quit!!"
Kerry
Fascinating that this topic should come up now; in two weeks I begin trainings in personality identification and communication styles.
That said, my responsibility will be to help participants identify their own styles in order to strengthen their personal and professional communication effectiveness!
Clearly, my ability to understand my own primary style, as well as to identify and articulate the styles of others, will be key to my effectiveness, and their learning!
Hi David:
Yes! Building relationships resulting in gaining respect. Along with with solid content knowledge, these two attributes can contribute much to getting students successfully through their studies.

Hi David:
I think if an individual cares about the quality of their work and also displays a genuine interest in the people they're reponsible for, they'll be effective.

As instructors we bring our skills, experience, knowledge and most of all our personalities to the class room. This is reflected in how we handle class room issues, interact with students, build relationship and gain respect. it is important for instructors to know his or her strengths and weaknesses so we leverage our strength and strengthen our weaknesses.
Whether I belong doing this. How am I going to be an effective educator and do my current teaching skills address all the different type of learning styles the students might have.
Hi Bob:
True, we can nearly always improve on activities invovled in education. But we also can keep in the mind the sentitment to seek excellence, not perfection. Thinking like that will help students and help us to "make their day!"

Man has to know his limitations[Clint Eastwood]. Limitations are there to be improved upon and overcome.
Hi Bernard:
Yes, definitely, a focused delivery will be the result when instructors know their strengths and areas needing improvement - and are willing to make those adjustments.
Regards, Barry
By understanding myself, I can better understand how to connect with different style of learners. By knowing what my strengths and weaknesses are, than I can effectively deliver the material by playing to my strengths, and openly evaluate any weak areas to be sure that I handled it well. Knowing my weaknesses will lesson frustrations and improve my delivery.
Hi Jim:
Good points made! I have refered to what you've described as getting on the same wave length. Of course this goes both ways - instructor-to-student and student-to-instructor. But when there is that connection, the results are likely to be worthwhile and productive.

When you are teaching a class your are leading the class. How you lead this class is very important for the educational success of each student. Understanding yourself is important in the fact the students need to relate to your style as you need to relate to them. Each student has different characteristics as we do. Leading the students on their educational adventure takes understanding of what it takes to get them there.
Hi Misty:
Great! Achieving that level of self understanding is often a long, arduous process that comes by trial and error. Perhaps more or less for some. But working to get there will produce many benefits and improved learning outcomes for your students.

Hi Edward:
Awesome. Many of the best instructors bring a diverse background of experiences and practical situations that can very useful in the classroom.

Hi Edward:
Great!. And you're right about change-ups - that when the class thinks you're going one direction and you decide to channel things a different way. That variety can contribute to meaningful student thoght and ultimate improved learning outcomes.

Hi Douglass:
Any instructor who is serioud about wanting to do their best will be willing to understand their weaker areas and attempt to make improvements. You've got a good perspective on that!
Regards, Barry
Understanding yourself allows you to play on your strengths in the classroom. The most important part of understanding yourself is knowing how to use that knowledge to enhance the learning environment.
