Field Trips

As, a librarian, I constantly encourage field trips to the library from classes, so that students will become expert users of library resources. If, students get to see what their field of work looks like outside of the class this helps them to become more focused on their studies.

As IT Instructor I like idea of taking my students to meetings of regional professional organizations and user groups. Student get to see what we do and the trends in technology which we discuss as well as networking with professionals in the field.

Hi Del:

Field trips and guest speakers are a great way to renew interest in the material you’ve been discussing in class. It gives the student’s a chance to speak with people (possibly in the field they are training for), and gain a different and new perspective about the topics at hand.

Also, they might get the chance to ask some questions about the topics you’ve discussed and get a better understanding overall.

I teach Crimiinal Justice Classes and find that field trips to Prisons, Court,Police depts etc are a great way to get the students involved in their field of study.

I agree on feild trips it gives the student a visual of what is expected of them in the future work feild

I assign a research paper each quarter and as part of the assignment, I require the students individually visit a library. The students have to meet a professional librarian and share in class what the student "discovered" while visiting the library. Students are often pleasantly surprised how helpful librarians are and the special collections that most libraries contain. Note: I am not a librarian.

A local software company?

I agree with everything eachone of you have already express. Field Trips allow students to see things from a different prespective. As a Medical Assistant Instructor, our students learn more from seeing and touching and a field trip helps bring everything together.

I love the idea but sometimes the execution can be a bit tricky. In IT they often don't want strangers seeing how things are setup. When you do find a willing business it can be hard to coordinate the business schedule with the students classroom schedule. When it works out though it is a fantastic tool!

Very good idea Carol. We enjoy having our students go to the library and the treasure hunt idea for books or book content has been a very big success.

I teach computer software classes and would love some field trip ideas.
