In my experience, being prepared before the class lecture and organized is important to the students because this tells them we are ready to get them interested in the day's lecture.
Donald,
Yeah, delivery is a form of relating to students. And while each class is a bit different, some things always true are reaching students at their level. The more we can try to relate at they're level, the more receptive they will be. Of course, we have to make sure our course objective are met. That must always be accomplished, even if the delivery methods have to be modified.

David,
Also, a lot of behavior issues can be diminished (or indirectly encouraged) depending on the degree of preparation by the instructor. We don't have to be strict, just, organized, prepared, and serious about instruction. Students will tend to follow suit.

I belive organizing and preparing to teach is placing the student first. I believe organizing information that will be delivered is important to catch the attention of the stydents. The delivery of information is important in order to maintain the attention of the student, and the content of the information is important to ensure the information is understood.
Students will pick up on an instructor who is not prepared. We are setting the standard of behavior. If the students see that the instructor is not prepared for class, then the instructor should not be surprised when the students exhibit the same behavior.
It is important to be organized and prepared to better facilitate the class and to stay on the curriculums schedule
Randy,
You're right, cklasses just run better with fewer problems abd better student interaction when solid preparation has preceded the planned class session.

Sue Ellen,
Good plan, and surely appreciated by your students.
Barry Westling
It is important to be prepared because 1st of all it helps you as an instructor to be confident in your class presentation. If students see that your not confident then they may doubt the information you are presenting.
I'm always arriving early for class to prepare before the students arrive. I prefer not having to leave to retrieve printed worksheets, notes etc.
Michael,
You're right, with good preparation, classes run smoother, students are more attentive, and the outcome is usually much better.
Barry Westling
Crystal,
Good point about preparing comprehensive materials. In these settings, the student is not really fully prepared without the preparation the instructor makes to assure the students get all needed information.
Barry Westling
Jennifer,
We can be role models, but even more, it's our job to be ready, organized, and prepared for class. There's really no excuse for not having everything being in order before class begins.
Barry Westling
Organization provide the instructors the road map to the start and end of each lecture which helps the student stay with the flow of the material presented. Furthermore, preparation for each class build confident and clarity during lectures.
I agree with being organized and prepared. I work in a discipline that is specific to each state while the book is overarching the entire nation. I need to have extra work and handouts available or the students won't know the required material to make it in the field.
If the teacher isnt organized how can they teach the students to be organized. We are there to start a foundation for the students and they mimic our actions. If an instructor comes late for class all the time then the students will feel that their time isnt important and they will begion to come late. And you cant discipline them for being tardy when the instructor is tardy.
Erica,
It's certainly possible that some students will emulate their instructor, although I've seen unprepared instructors who facilitated classes with very organized and prepared students. We are role models and I agree it's very important to do all the needed prep work to assure we run our classes smoothly, with all resources readied and a realistic game plan.
Barry Westling
If the instructor is not organized, the students will not be organized. The instructor is the role model and we are to model the behavior we expect from our students.
Nathan,
I agree that students may respect a prepared instructor. I have been in classes where I was fully prepared and giving 110%, yet I felt there was not respect. I do believe, it's true, respect is a two-way street.
Barry Westling
It's a sign of respect towards the students, the material you are teaching and in yourself.
If you aren't willing to put the effort in, the students will pick it up. And if they think you don't respect them or the material, then they will not learn as well as they should.
When teaching adults, respect is important. They have to respect you, and they must know that you respect them.
