Hi Jose:
Your need and desire for accomodating your students is apparent and poses a challenge for you as instructor to provide the needed learning in a manner your students are capable of accomplishing. I bet you have uncovered ways and methods that work to your students advantage.

Mainly because I have students who have bad hand and eye skills. Using the mouse is a challenge to them... sliding playing cards face down offers a similar aspect.
Hi Bobby:
Once again, the unique type of instruction you deliver provides a bouquet of opportunities to choose alternative media to suit your students. Sounds like you're utilizing many good choices.

Since the body of students in my classes constantly change with each new block(every three weeks), I am always assessing each new student to find out his/her leaning stimuli and what senses I can stimulate or arouse to achieve the best learning situation. In a culinary career school it is essential that besides using media such as a PP presentation, that I constanly demonstrate in the class the step by step proceedures to achieve the best results of a finished and plated dish. It is my job. as instructor, to not only stimulate information processing with a Sight and Sound presentation, but also, to place great emphasis on the other three senses of Smell, Touch and Taste. This is very possible with "hands on learning", and in the idustry of food, the colors, smells, shapes and textures all add to the excitment of learning and procedding new methods and techniques in the culinary arts field.

Hi Jason:
Good points. That "supplemental addition" probably makes many class sessions go much more smoothly and contributes much to the interest and learning of your students.

I believe that variety in the classroom is a valuable tool that helps to keep the course fresh and exciting for the students. When I think about what type of media I will incorporate into my lectures and demonstartions I try to choose one that complements what it is that I already have in place. I prefer to select something that "adds" to my style that way my everyday teaching is consistent and can only be enhanced rather than replaced. I feel that continuity in the classroom is something that offers the students a sense of security that they can depend on when they come to class everyday. I think media is a great addtion but I also feel that there is no substitute for the live interaction bewtween the instructor and student that occurs in lecture or demo.
Hi Lin:
PPT's can be a great asset to have in class if the slides are developed well and the instructor uses it as an adjunct to the lesson rather than the focus of the lesson. Too much reliance on "the tool" can lead to less interested and less informed students.

i use powerpoint presentation in my class because it is convenience and well organized lay out. It makes both instructor and students so easy to follow.
Hi Albert:
Good thought Albert. You have to use what's available and think about what might better or other media as alternatives.
Regards, Barry
I think you must select media that fits your environment and facility. The media must be easily delivered without it being a distraction. Your students will need supplemental material that will link the media with the content, course requirements and expected presentations.
Hi James:
Well, the available resources may be good and there are good reasons to seek out other resources to assist the students in their learning experience. If we look at what a student needs to know about a topic and compare it to the ways we're going to try and teach it, we may find there are many additional or alternate methods to accomplish the goal.

Alot of times it's because it's there.
Hi Kenneth:
Right, we want to reach our students, so we selective evaluate how best to approach different topics to maximise our time and the students learning. Optimmaly, these btwo objectives mesh together.
Regards, Barry
Hi James:
You're right. There are so many potential media resources, care and thought really have to go into what respouces will prove to be most beneficial. Sometimes, when we try something new, we can surprised at how effective it is. Of course, that can work the other way as well.
Regards, Barry
My reasons for selecting a certain form of media is to effectively reach the students. After an initial student assessment of how they best learn, I utilize several forms of media to instruct. This also changes the educational delivery and makes the class more engaged.
Hi Anthony:
Well, good. I know some company policy prohibits the use or resources that students or instructors may find educational. You're right, we need to stay within the boundries of our employers policies.

Mainly, I would say that the selection for support media would depend on whether or not it is relevant, interesting, and able to assist in the students understanding of the course material. Further more it needs to be in line with the comprension evaluation of the students. If we present material via one media but expect that they will be able to effective transfer that knowledge to another form for evaluation we will likely find they falter. For example learning anatomy and using powerpoint as a visual aid we would want to insure that this is supportive of the evaluation modality. So in summary as this last module covered there are many media that can facilitate learning but it is best to use the media that is in line with the objectives of the course being taught.
I select the media I use depending on the subject. If I have media that will enhance the students learning ability I will use it in a way that will not break company policy.
Hi Stan:
Whats good here is some flexibility in your approach to individual classes. Too much flexibility can lead to varied student outcomes. Sometimes, it's too late to correct a plan once enacted. So, I'd say stick to a basic framework and then individualize from there. Perhaps, that is exactly what you do.
Regards, Barry
Every course and class is different. I meet with my students on the first day and determine what will work best for the group.
