Jamie,
I agree. I think confidence is an internal belief or sense about how well a student understands or has mastered the the material. We can instill confidence as an encouragement, and we provide confidence through solid instructional outcomes.

Educating the students well. Prepare them for the work force and make them confident in what they have learned.

Steven,
Yes, and although you're relating these goals to the realm of economics, I have to say that the intellectual prowess that students acquire with our instructional goals is applicable to many trades and professions. Ultimately it's what a student does with their learning that matters most (none the least, their employer).

Barry Westling

Goal to provide student with skills, knowledges and abilities which will enhance their personal and professional experience/productivity. As economics instructor, approach is to invest in students human capital....human capital being the intellectual tools to productively function in a service based economy and an economy that needs exports of information/service products and technology.

Bakhriya,
Yes, we should be providing the basic skills and knowledge that are linked to successful learning. If we can also add profressionalism, critical thinking, and traits like good attendance, punctuality, and good communication (written and spoken), we will have achieved a good thing.

my goal is to help people to get good education and start new career

Tracey,
Yeah, the application part is probably the most challenging as this requires thinking and problem solving out in the workplace.

Barry Westling

The goal is for them to retain, retrieve and apply knowledge that they were taught.

Richard,
Great sentiments. Yes, in many ways, and in different ways, our mission is to improve lives through the brief time we have the students under our supervision. Sometimes I think there is so much chaos in our students private lives that schhol is actually a respite from the life challenges and issues that seemingly swallow their time and attention away from school work.

The goal is to graduate a well rounded student knowledgeable in their chosen field of study. The soft skills discussed in this course are so important for students to embrace. They are as important as learning a new skill and yet for some, the most difficult to learn. The bottom line in all of this, I believe, is that as educators, we strive to change lives.

Tracy,
I like that sentiment of "contributor". Job readiness definitely involves knowledge and skills. But I also think, professionism, grooming, speech and writing, and general behavior are factors that not only get the job but also keep the job. If we can provide some of that, we'll have helped our grads in their job pursuits.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to get them from a place of not having a particular knowledge base and skill set, to a place of not only having a newly acquired knowledge base and skill set, but to be contributors in their chosen fields.

Jonathan,
Yes, as instructors, our job is vital to the continuance and advancement of skills, knowledge, behavior, and thinking abilities that will assist students in meeting the demands of their future employers, communities, and society as a whole. I think that these attributes should be a key component to a career students education.

Ultimately, it's about passing on a set of skills that will allow them to be contributing members of a society. In order to participate in this world, in our local communities, we must learn a set of skills that will make us valuable to that setting. We, as instructors, are responsible to pass along the information that we have gained to those who come to us to learn.

Alicia,
Yes, providing the knowledge and skills, along with the professional attributes needed for success will contribute to the preparation for work, and perhaps assist in students' personal lives as well.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to prepare them for todays workforce.

Barbara,
You've touched on an important goal, although usually not a written one, and that is the ability to make choices -- good choices, or at least better choices in their career and personal lives. Education should provide the foundational for lifelong learning and growth.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to provide them with the tools of learning to enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills which they will need to draw from and use in the career field of their choice and training. Ultimately, the student can use this education when faced with situations that may require critical thinking and practical application. Quite often, the knowledge and skills that are acquired in the classroom can also be applied to aspects of their personal lives.

Allison,
Right! I've heard it said that more employees are let go because of the "soft skill" related kind of situations, more that the technical skill the employee is hired to do. That would suggest soft skills are nearly equally as important as the professional or technical aspects of our training.

Barry Westling

The short-term goal is to make sure they acquire new knowledge detailed in your course and daily objectives. The longterm goal is to teach life skills (the course calls them soft skills) of being on time to class, participating in class, doing homework and learning discipline. These life skills are going to aid them in the job market as well as groom them for becoming productive and contributing citizens in their communities.
